Do you dry clean your down comforter or put it in washing machine?

The cleaning instructions say to professionally dry clean only. I called our cleaners and it will be 35.00!! Ouch. So how strict do you think those instructions are? Is there any way I could put it on a gentle cycle? What do you do with yours?

It would depend on the comforter....how much I paid for it, what it was made of, etc. My washer has a deep steam and a sanitize cycle and I just run it through on that. My comforter was part of a bed-in-a-bag though and is a garden-variety comforter.

I do it all the time, wash on a gentle cycle but get in there myself to move it around some as the air keeps some of it poppong up out of the water.

When I dry - I do it on a lower heat and throw a couple of tennis balls in there - noisy but it keeps pounding the down into place. Takes a couple of hours to dry. Once it isnt so damp I turn up the heat.

I have this one about 4 years and wash it every couple of months

It is 75% white down and the cover is 100% cotton. I think I paid about 160.00 for it.

We paid about $200 for our down comforter. I have a front loader washing machine so I wash it in my washer once a month on gentle and an air dry cycle in the dryer

Ok thanks. Did your instructions say to dry clean too and you just took the risk that first time?

I've been doing ours ever since we got our front loader. Cold cycle-(I have not used the gentle cycle but I guess I will now)

Ah....down comforter. I have one that I use in winter and I also wash it and then hang it to air dry.

It does say dry clean, but I figured it would be safe on the gentle cycle. I have to admit I was holding my breath a little when I pulled it out though :rotfl:

I have a front loader, why does that make a difference?

Ok I'm going to give it a shot guys. Front loader, check. Cold water check. Gentle cycle and then air dry cycle, check. I love the Dis for quick advise:cloud9: Thanks everyone and wish me luck!

Most front loaders use less water when washing clothes/or down comforters and there is no agitator - so the comforter moves around freely in the washer.

Disclaimer - KAMKIM is in no way responsible if JillPie's comforter gets shredded in washing machine :lmao: JK I'm sure it will be fine - toss in some bounce in the dryer you'll be :cloud9: when you go to bed tonight.

I dry clean it. We have a king size bed, so my washer/dryer isn't big enough to handle the comforter anyhow.

Ok, so after running across this thread, I'm very curious to find out if it worked! I've had mine for about 4 years now and never cleaned it..:sad2: I've been contiplating whether or not to take it to a cleaner but... It's so expensive!!! I'd love to hear how your's turned out!! Good Luck!!!!:rolleyes1

I dry clean mine. We bought it in 1973 from Eddie Bauer and it is good as new. We do cover it with a zip-on cover to avoid stains, though. I wash the cover frequently.

LindaG---- You still have one from 1973??????????? And you still use it???? And it's not shredded?????

I had no idea they'd last that long.

I'm totally impressed.:thumbsup2

I buy a new one every two years or so.

I dry cleaned one once after my DH had the flu (it was only two months old-) and it cost $100 for a King size so - I figured I just buy an inexpensive one every two years or so.

But dang. I'm still hung up on the 1973 comforter.

:goodvibes

:rotfl::rotfl: too funny girl. Ok here's my update! Success! But not after some nervous moments... I did the gentle cycle. It came out drenched weighing 200 lbs, I put it back for another spin cycle and that worked. But I was so nervous that it was gonna rip it to pieces! I'm still drying it on delicate, but that taking a long time. I don't want to put it on regular dry. But it smells nice and clean now! Yummy, fresh sheets and comforter tonight.:hippie:

I bought a fluffy, down-alternative, queen size comforter recently. This one is too big & fluffy to fit in my washer now. :( I think I have to take it to a laundromat that has one of those industrial size, extra large washers.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that - it does really soak up the water.
