We all get them. Those stupid emails that everyone knows are fake. Today I got one that had pictures of a tree in South Africa called the Baboo tree that has all kinds of animals carved into it-a natural occurrence! I sent back an email explaining that (as we all know) that tree was not in South Africa, it was actually in Central Florida, and it was the Tree of Life in Animal Kingdom-man made. ( I actually just said it was a fake tree in WDW, didn't want to sound sarcastic.) This came from one of my mom's friends who sends me these kind of wild "out there" emails a lot. I usually only correct it if it is information she may be relying on and I include the snopes link and send it back. Yesterday it was an email warning everyone of the pending release of cell phone numbers to telemarketers.

Do you just delete, or do you send back correct information?

Yup, I'm a freak - usually "reply all" with the snopes link attached.

That has backfired on me now, as a few people (ones guilty of the afore-mentioned offense) will email me, asking if something is "right" before they send it out to everyone they know!

I usually just delete. When I clicked on the thread I thought it was going to be one about whether or not you correct grammar and/or spelling in emails! :rotfl:

Depends on who is sending them. My mother-in-law believes every email she reads is 100% true and constantly forwards all sorts of garbage. I like correcting those. :)

LOL-so did I.

Me Too!!!:rotfl2:
I actually had a cousin who wrote me a LOONNNNGGG reply about how snopes is not to be trusted!

For that one, I might have been tempted to reply:

":rotfl: Thanks for the laugh. I know you know how much I love WDW. The "Tree of Life" in Animal Kingdom" is one of my favorites."

Just thought you guys might like to see the email I got today. Here is the snopes link for it, although you know I didn't have to go there to correct this info!

The email I got said it was in South Africa, this one is in India. Wow S. Africa, India, Central Florida, these trees grow everywhere!

tinatark, I reply all, too. What I would really like to do is reply to the person who sent it to my friend in the first place.

That's exactly what I do, too. But only when I consider it an "abuse" of my e-mail. Ex.: If you have my e-mail address because you are the scout master, I expect you to only send me scouting information. Don't you DARE send me junk! I get plenty from other sources, thank you.

I had to do this one last week. Our community watch leader sent out an email to EVERYONE saying that a crime had happened in our area. It was the "thief breaks into car, steals GPS and garage door opener and robs home"

Well I checked snopes and sure enough it was there. Been going around since 07 I think.

I was gentle about it but really someone in that position should check before they pass something off as gospel IMHO.
To her credit she did send out a correction with my link.

This is exactly what I do - it's amazing at the stuff people will pass on, without verifying if it's true or not!

I once went a little too far with this.

My aunt constantly forwards emails. Mostly the really superficial ones, but she has sent a few that I found offensive (Obama is a secret Muslim, anyone?). I usually just delete, but I was starting to get really annoyed. There was one with all these "facts" about immigration. At the end of the email it said something along the lines of "If you don't believe, check it out for yourself" and then gave a bunch of links. Well, I went through each "fact" and corrected it using only information from the provided links. I probably spent 2 hours reading through all of the information and writing up numbered responses for each of the facts.

I hit "reply all" and said I couldn't believe some of these facts so I decided to visit the links and then provided the accurate information for each of the "facts". My aunt never responded.

Depending on the subject. It I deem it important I correct it and send it back to the original sender. If its a huge mistake with incorrect info I send it to everyone it was sent to originally.

I do too. I actually now have people looking at snopes before they send them because I have sent to the link back

It depends. One of those silly "pass this to 700 of your best friends and you'll have angels watching over you" things, I just roll my eyes and delete it. If it's particularly gag worthy I forward it to DH so we can laugh about it.

Now the ones that are a bit more serious, or like the gift card one before Christmas, I will add a snopes link and the snopes info and hit reply all. My mom and my aunt are really big suckers for those, it seems one or another is always calling me and telling me something bad. Last week it was my mom and she told me not to buy gift cards to Applebees, Old Navy or something else because they were all closing on 1.30.09. Uh huh

this is exactly what i do as well. my aunt is a constant offender, in fact she just sent me the email for the microsoft email test to forward and make some money :rotfl2:

i thought she would stop sending the emails after the first correction or the even the tenth, but nope she keeps pushing them forward. she never responds to my replies either.

Generally no. Most are from my DH's grandmother and I just don't want to expend the effort.

My friends generally don't forward.

I do, however, think I may have responded to the Tree of Life one.
