Do you consider this DISHONEST?

What are your feelings on this?

  • I see no problem.

  • I "think" it "should" be illegal.... seems like fraud to me.

  • It is dishonest and just plain wrong, but not illegal.

  • I'm not sure.

There was an episode of King of Queens once where Carrie became addicted to buying expensive clothes to fit in with her office (Versace suits and whatnot) when she learned that she could wear them with the tags tucked in and then return them within a certain time limit. She acquired a HUGE collection and became completely overwhelmed trying to keep track of what needed to be returned when, and was thousands of dollars in debt. :teeth:

LOL, I saw that episode! It was cracking me up when Doug tried to return something and got freaked out.

This just boggles my mind!!! In my country you cannot do stuff like that - it is trouble to return stuff, and you often only get store credit anyway. We just don't have the "buy it and return it" mentality! I always make sure I really want something before I buy it - and I would never dream of taking things home to try them on and bringing them back if they didn't fit! I've done that once at a wholesale club that had no fitting rooms, and it felt really, really strange.

Stores are in the business of selling, not renting - if they wanted you to use it and bring it back it would be a RENTAL company and they'd charge you a fee! :sad2:

I bought a carpet stretcher from Home Depot. My husband took it back when he was done. I bet everyone has done it at least once in their lives.
I can tell you that I've never done that. Why would you take it back after using it? Did it not work? If it didn't work, fine. But if you used it for a job and it worked then it's absolutely wrong to take it back. I have lots of things that I've used only once. And I bought them knowing I would use them once. But, I bought them, I didn't rent them.

I'm willing to bet there are more honest people than that. I know I haven't done it yet in my 28 years on this earth, nor do I ever plan on doing it.

And I can't remember if this was on the DIS or not, but there was a story on one those primetime news magazines that outted certain stores in Manhattan for accepting returned undergarments....some possibly worn. Now that is gross... :crazy2:

stores don't let you return those. (Thank the lord!)
But I have heard of people buying something, wearing it, then taking it back.

I used to work at Urban Outfitters. blah..

Anyway one girl came in and returned something that she had obviously worn. It looked like she had ran with the bulls it was so wrinkled. :rotfl:

Thought for sure this was illegal....might be hard to prove, but certainly illegal. At any rate - pretty rotten. I'm sure someday the'll reap what they've sown. :sad2:

I think it's dishonest & wrong. I have purchased things, brought them home & then decided they didn't look good or where not exactly what I wanted & then returned it, but I didn't use it first.

Almost seems like stealing to me if you use something with the intention of returning it after you no longer have the use for it. JMO!

I was talking to a Lowes' employee once and she was telling me that they had someone buy a Christmas tree from them and then return it after the holidays. :earseek:

:rotfl: It probably was me, returning my hamster's mini Christmas tree.

I can't believe someone brought back a Christmas tree after Christmas. :rotfl:

I know at CompUSA there was a sign stating no returns after the Super Bowl or words to that effect. So some stores are aware of what people do.

Ok, I had to think about it, but I once returned a dress after I wore it to a wedding. I really loved it and wanted to keep it, but it criss crossed across the bosom and the seams of the fabric were torture and were really uncomfortable so I returned it. I didn't buy it with the intent to return it though. I had it cleaned (it was dry clean only) then called the store and explained it BEFORE I took it in (they said to return it when I told them about the seams).

I would think if you purchase something with the intention of returning it that that would be fraud. isn't fraud illegal? If si, then what they are doing should be illegal.

I am 46 and I have never returned anything that I used...it is just plain wrong.

Sorry I told about our one incident. No one else wants to admit to it on this post because they are afraid they will be blasted. I should never had assumed that maybe people have done it at least once in their lives. Even you Papa Deuce were wondering who the people are that don't have a problem with it.

I agree, I would never make a practice of buying something with the intention of taking it back.

Before my dd went back to college we needed to buy her a tv for her college apartment. We found one in Sears and the guy admitted some customer bought the tv for the spare bedroom when he had family over for Christmas. We bought a 27 inch Sony for $125, there is nothing wrong with it and it is under warranty for 3 years. We just didn't have a box for it when we left the store, but they shrunk wrapped it for us.

Has anyone every tried to take back a toy that got broken. I can't believe how many toys I have thrown out because they broke. I could have tried to take them back and gotten my money back, but I never did.d

I have not ever done this. Not once.

But I don't think it's illegal. A lot of retailers have a policy of accepting returns at any time for any reason (with proper documentation).

I work retail and we have a very weird guy who comes in all the time rarely buys anything. When he does buy something it somehow gets damaged and he returns it. Why doesn't he just return it w/o damaging it first? Most recently he returned a snowglobe that had a piece broken off. Did he want another to replace it--heck no!! Just like he didn't want another jacket that somehow got a hole in it. I kind of get wearing the jacket a time or two then bringing it back but the snowglobe?? What do you do unpack it enjoy it for just a few days and then return it. Sorry I am ranting sore subject. He also prepurchases videos, returns them and of course keep the lithos!
ugh!

I did this once, with a dress. I plead the callousness of youth - I was 19 at the time.

I felt really guilty about it, and I haven't done anything like that since.

In college I worked at a Barnes & Noble, and we had many customers who would use us like a library. Buy the book, read the book, return the book. One guy kept a giant binder full of receipts going back months. And yeah, we took back every book.

Years ago when I worked at Monkey Wards (AKA Montgomery Wards) we had a customer bring in a pair of dress slacks for return, no receipt, no tags. We ended up calling the store manager because not only had they been worn but she had the length altered.

She started shrieking so loudly that the store manager agreed to give her a cash refund.

And to think, Monkey Wards filed bankruptcy and later went out of business. :confused3
