Do you consider it stealing?

aren't you a crabby pants!

Nope salaried exec here.

I am not the type to take my 15 minutes break and gossip at the water cooler, so I surf. I eat lunch at my desk and surf. I think the people who go outside evey 20-30 minutes to smoke a cigarette is "stealing" company time moreso than one one who pops on the Dis to look at a few things.

Disclaimer: I am not putting down smokers, I am just making a point.

No, I don't. I am a Graphic Designer and my work load is like a roller coaster. It's feast or famine. This week for example I have NO projects - seriously, I have nothing to do. (I wish they would just send me home, but I need to be here just incase :() So I play on the internet to keep myself awake. And sometimes I even read! But if I'm busy with work, you won't see me on the internet at all. I'll be working a 70 hour week instead. So you see - it all evens out.

Do we work together??? I am a Graphic Designer, also. And I am SOOOOOO slow this week (month).

I had 2 projects this morning and now I am twiddling my thumbs. Being here looks better than sleeping..

I have the double whammy of being both salaried, and ON CALL 2 or 3 nights a week until 1am with a TEENY TINY stipend. Of course I'm also in IT and help set internet policies....All of my bosses, up to and including the CIO of the company say it's OK that I surf sometimes during the day, as they feel the company owes me more than I owe it.

So, nope, I do not consider it stealing at all

:rotfl2: You never know! There is a good chance we went to the same school though!

Now that I think of it, I have been productive today. I payed my bills, and did some shopping online, all from my desk at work! Are you shocked? :earboy2:

Nope. I'm salaried and have a certain set of requirements to complete day to day. As long as everything's getting done and getting done properly, nobody cares. :)
Same here. Also I am never the long pole in a project. I once had a manager tell me the time I wait for others to finish is my reward for a job well done. The one day they had a problem and I could not do any work for the morning. I was told to go read a book.

I'm in public accounting. For us it's feast or famine. I'm either overwhelmed or bored stiff. (am salaried as well) As long as my work gets done on time no one cares.

I am an independent contractor so when I am working I don't have the option of using a computer. My husband is a manager and feels that using the computer for personal business or entertainment is stealing company time. I have never asked him about what about breaks and lunch time. I'd say find out what company policy is and go with that.

I don't eat but I've been know to grab a bottle of soda from one of the coolers by the register and drink it while I shop at Walmart. When I go to the SuperWalmart, I'm in for 3 hours minimum. I always take my bottle to the register & pay for it. In fact, once an employee overheard one of my boys comment that he was thirsty as we walked in. She suggested we take a drink and pay for it when we check out. She said it's fine.

I never surfed the web when working outside the home. But also didn't have unpaid overtime or on call duties. My jobs were the type where i felt all the time in the office i was being paid to work. And there was always more work than could be accomplished during work hours. Didn't play Tetris or balance checkbook on company time either.

I don't smoke I surf. It is the same as far as I'm concerned. They go outside 15, 20 minutes and smoke off and on all day. I surf off and on all day. Works for me. :)

Well, I have this open in the background while I am working and I jump back and forth - I call it multi-tasking.

As for my number of posts, they don't all take much time - many times you are just posting a hug or a smile to someone and it counts as a post. I don't do it to boost my count; just to give a quick "hi" to people when i'm busy. :)

I own my own business so I can do whatever I want whenever I want :cool1:

In my company we have a company agreement regulating the use of the web. It states that during our breaks we are free to surf the web. If someone surfs outside these times I consider it stealing and so does my company.

That's me as well!

ya my boss gets pretty ticked when I am plyaingmore than working on the computer...
wait :rotfl: I am MY boss.

I'm a teacher - - I'm only at the computer during my 30 minute, duty-free lunch. That time is my time.

I often am amazed at the number of posts some people have. It seems that many of you post form work, so tell me is surfing the internet and participating in boards such as these, considered stealing? Is stealing the time from your employer any different than walking off with supplies, or abusing a time clock? I do not DIS or surf the net from work and just wondered if anyone here considers it theft?

I don't think it is stealing as long as your work performance does not suffer. I have to admit, though, that I am also amazed at the number of posts some people have on these boards (I've seen 10,000, 14,000 and up)! How do you get anything done at work or at home?

No, I don't consider it stealing.

If I'm really busy it work, I won't even get on the internet. But some days are so boring. A lot of times if I'm on the phone with a real bore, I will read posts on the DIS while having my phone conversation. Or sometimes, if I'm crunching a lot of numbers, I will take a 15 minute break from that every hour or so and do something relaxing (like DIS).

But, my company does have a policy. We are all aware that they monitor our internet usage. It has never been used against anyone but I'm sure that they keep the information and will pull it out and use it if necessary if they want to get rid of someone. They also block specific sites so that we can't do certain things. I cannot access ebay from the office.
