I often am amazed at the number of posts some people have. It seems that many of you post form work, so tell me is surfing the internet and participating in boards such as these, considered stealing? Is stealing the time from your employer any different than walking off with supplies, or abusing a time clock? I do not DIS or surf the net from work and just wondered if anyone here considers it theft?

Nope. I'm salaried and have a certain set of requirements to complete day to day. As long as everything's getting done and getting done properly, nobody cares. :)

No, I work for my husband and the office work is super light, not much to do some days so that is when I surf, post, pay bills, call my friends, read mags, make up grocery lists and etc. :sunny:

Same here. I surf the net during lunch, or during down times (like while I am waiting for something to run before I can continue). I don't surf when I have something else to do.

I suppose if someone didn't do any of their job requirements and instead surfed, they could be "stealing" time/money from their employer.

It's not my place to judge what someone else does (or doesn't do) at work. Like Bob, I have certain deadlines and requirements to meet and as long as that is accomplished, no one really cares. Some people are also gifted multi-taskers.

Nope, my boss is a real sweetie and doesn't care how I spend my days. Surfing the internet is just one of the many benefits of being self-employed.

Besides...everyone is entitled to a break now and again. And, to answer the obvious question--I don't care if employees do it either as long as their work is getting done on time.

No, I don't. I am a Graphic Designer and my work load is like a roller coaster. It's feast or famine. This week for example I have NO projects - seriously, I have nothing to do. (I wish they would just send me home, but I need to be here just incase :() So I play on the internet to keep myself awake. And sometimes I even read! But if I'm busy with work, you won't see me on the internet at all. I'll be working a 70 hour week instead. So you see - it all evens out.

Same here. Some days I can get my job done in a matter of a few hours, other days I put in 15 hour days with no time to post.

Unfortunately on the days I get things done early, I can't jsut leave, because you never know when somthing will come up that has to be dealt with. I put out fires a few tiems a week...

I am also salaried and I figure as long as my work is getting done, then why not? Now I don't know if my employer would see it differently, but I have been told I do my job very well and my former boss said that I am the best person that has ever been in my position. If I was paid hourly, that might be a different story.

Most jobs seem to have down time. If an employer doesn't care if their employees are surfing the net during downtime then I certainly have no problem with it.

I'm a school teacher. I DIS on my lunch half-hour. That's my time-not stealing.

Well, my boss said he expected me to DIS... otherwise he knows he wouldnt' have a happy person working for him... oh wait my boss is my husband ;)

My other job though, we had a lot of time where there would be processing or waiting on databases to do their job. Most poeple would have a game or web page or phone converstaion going while the computer & databases were plugging away. As long as we got our job done, that's all they cared about.

If it weren't internet, it was Solitare or Tetris for me.

Depends on the policies of your company that determine whether or not you can surf the internet and what you should be doing instead of surfing the internet.

My old company--if work was done and I was in "waiting" mode--the only rules were the usual stuff--no "naughty" sites. :) That will get you fired regardless if you were "stealing" time or not.

Yes...now everyone get back to work!!!!

Just Kidding!!!! Oh come on...that was kind of funny!!! :rotfl: I definitely don't consider it stealing!!! I work very hard all day at my job. I take a few breaks throughout my day to check out what is going on at the Dis. My boss has seen me and says, that's fine, I don't care! (not to mention he pretty much surfs the net all day while he is here).

I have been at my job for 10 years. They know that I get my stuff done so they don't say anything!!

ditto!

i'm an early retiree-don't think i knew about the dis when i was working :confused3

i worked for an employer that trusted employees not to abuse their internet access on their desktops (could use it during breaks, lunch) BUT came to find out that the IT division was running reports on employee usage (sights/length of time) and regularly provided these to top managment who chose to pull them out and use them when contract renegotiations were underway (pointed out how much time the average employee was surfing per day and successfully argued that neither raises in salary nor workload reductions were valid for negotiation). they also terminated some staff for operating personal bsns. on company time (ebay, real estate...).

I agree with the above posters. It really depends on the nature of your work. I teach at the college level...most of my work is done at home. My office hours, 10 hours a week, are just a formality...to be there at specified times if the student needs my help. As long as I get my work done, how I spend my time in the office is up to me.

My husband, on the other hand, a salaried employee as well, is always busy with work and being on the Internet is frowned upon. However, if it's during the lunch hour...no problem.

As long as I do the work at time, my supervisor doesn't care that I'm on Dis.
He even jokes about it when he walks past me.
Besides, I don't have alot to do right now, so why not Dis?
