Do you camp?

Tent camper here. Sleeping has gotten very comfortable with the nice inflatable mattresses! The kids still rough it on a foam pad though.

Really the only thing hard about tent camping is keeping your "kitchen" stuff organized. I finally got it all together so I just have to grab the kit and stick it in the car along with a cooler and a couple bags of groceries. That has made life tons easier.

Ditto for me on the air mattress! Last time I even brought a top and bottom sheet and it was almost like home!!

And the only "kitchen stuff" I bring is a really long roasting tool, a grill and a spatula! We don't do too much cooking!!

CJMickeyMouse: You CAN have all those thing anywhere! But not for several days in a row at a rather minimal cost. We can party to our heart's content and no one needs a designated driver!:D :D

WOW! I can't believe how many campers out there ~ & tent campers too!

My friend mentioned Supreme Travel Trailers today in an e-mail & I did a search on them......wow wee! I could certainly "camp" in one of those! I bet FOJMO could too! There are about as big & as nice as the condo I had in California!!

So have any of you stayed at Fort Wilderness?

I see your point, but camping is just not for us.

The people we get together with are not campers either.... we just "camp" at each other's homes for extended periods of time and take turns cooking and cleaning up. No cost but food and beverages..... I don't think we would do very well without the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher! :)

We LOVE to camp! During the summer, we go at least once or twice a month, and as frequently as we can during the school year. We camp in a tent. Actually, we have 2 tents, one for DH and me, and one for the kids. :teeth: We just bought a canoe, and can't wait to go canoe camping sometime. I just can't figure out how to pack 2 adults, 2 kids, and our gear in a single canoe, though. :p

So far this summer, we've gone to several state parks here in Texas, camped on the beach in FL for a week, and have gone to the Ozark mountains. We're going somewhere this weekend too, but we haven't decided where yet. We're thinking about Big Bend National Park.

The one place we've camped that I'll NEVER go back though, is Fort Wilderness. We simply HATED camping there. It is one of the worst camp grounds I've been too. Very cramped, close sites, TERRIBLE noise and fumes from the buses, dirty bathroon facilities, and absolutely no peace and tranquility which is the reason we camp in the first place.

Call me weird, but I kind of wish I could go back to the "good old days" when our summer place was REALLY camping..

Used to be we had no running water.. We brought drinking water in 5 gallon jugs - and there was a well in the woods where we would get pails of water for flushing the potty..

We had no electricity - so that meant no fridge (we used an old fashioned ice box and went to the big old "ice house" to get the blocks of ice as needed) - no lights, so we used kerosene lanterns (and my DH would entertain the kids by making shadow puppets on the walls - we also played LOADS of board games; told stories; REALLY spent "family" time together) - we used an old 3-burner kerosene stove for cooking - and we had no heat (so there was lots of "cuddling" when it got cold).. No television - no radios - and most evenings were spent sitting out by the campfire..

In my eyes, things started to "go downhill" after the last of my kids left home.. DH didn't want me up there alone during the week while he was working, so we had a party-line telephone installed.. He didn't want me messing with the kerosene while I was alone either so we "upgraded" to a bit of electricity.. Then I found that I heard LOTS of noises when I was alone that I never noticed before, so I got a small black & white t.v. to drown out any unidentifiable noises..

From there the "upgrades" just kept snowballing and when my son-in-law (who is VERY handy with things) came into my DD's life little by little he installed "this", "upgraded that", and now I feel like I'm home instead of camping..

I have electricty, a full-size fridge, an electric stove, running water (when the well doesn't go dry), electric heat, color t.v., VCR, stereo, private phone, answering machine, air conditioning, outside sensor lights, computer, internet access, and on and on...

Gosh - sometimes I really do miss "the good old days...." :(

Yes, we camp with our pop-up. The kids love it, and we love the peace and quiet of being away from the city.

I LOVE to camp. We "rough" it :D in a tent. It's not really camping if you take your whole house with you. ;)

That would be an emphatic NO! ;) :p

Count me in with those who think a 3 star hotel is camping...it is just so NOT my thing. I'm allergic to all sorts of bugs and need a real bed at night...and a real bathroom.

I enjoy the outdoors (okay, actually I enjoy the BEACH and that's about it) but don't want to sleep there...at night. :)

we first had a pop up in 1999 and in 2001 bought a new travel trailer....it is 32 foot jayco with a super slide (dinette and couch area slides out) and bunks for the kids. I still miss my pop up.....but with the travel trailer, it's really not like camping at all.

We would like to get the 325 jayco fifth wheel eventually......but the one we saw was about 30,000......just not ready for that yet

We are going camping this labor day.....then to Cedar Pt in Sept........it is fun

I take DS camping. Our idea of "camping" changed this year tho. Previous years we were fine just renting a cabin with nothing but a bed. Now we only rent a cabin w/a sm kitchenette and bathroom! Our idea of camping is needing to go to the bathhouse for a shower!

I was so shocked to read Wendy's post about Fort Wilderness! Do you think that could have been just an isolated case or is it always that bad? Gee, we were thinking about renting an RV & staying there! Not now! Could it depend where you are lodged that the bus fumes would be bothersome? Oh, I'm so disappointed to hear this news. :(

We love to camp. Or rather I love to camp, DH does it to make me happy. We have a little tent and a big tent for when family comes with us.
I would love to have a camper, nothing big, just a place to sleep if it rained.

Mishetta, Wendy is the first person I've ever heard say that didn't like FW. Go over to the "Camping at WDW" forum, and they'll answer any questions you have.

Sonya ~ you can still camp with baby...only now, you & your family will stay in the little tent & the big tent will be used to hold all of Samuel's things! :teeth: Isn't it amazing what you need for a baby?

Thanks for the suggestion Bichon Barb....will do!
