Do you call and confirm your rental?

We have reserved a minivan through Avis.com for our trip coming up... I just have this fear of showing up and them not having a van available, esp since there is no deposit or anything required when you reserve. We will be on a tight time schedule that day, and don't really have time to remedy the situation if they dont have it when we get there...

Has this happened to anyone before? Showing up and not having the right vehicle? Do you call the location directly prior to your trip and confirm they have your reservation and car?

I don't want to bother them if there's nothing to worry about...

usually we call the day before just to confirm what we have booked....

we usually go with national

but am sure avis must have an 800# you can call just to verify

make sure you get a name of the person you talk to just in case...

If it is a busy time of year they overbook just like the airlines. They do this because so many people hold several reservations and never cancel the ones they aren't going to use. So there are times you can get to the counter and they are out of cars. They do try and upgrade you at that point but I know of cases where people had to come back the next day to pick up a car.

The thought of having this happen is scary!!

Usually they try to upgrade you so they can accomodate you but sometimes there isn't anything they can do.

What needs to happen is they need to crack down on people that make multiple reservations and then don't cancel the ones they don't want. It makes it hard when they try to forecast the demand for vehicles.
