OK guys - more advice please :)

Just bought some holiday clothes.....not too much as I plan on buying most of it out there as it's cheap!

Never been to USA before....do most of you tend to do this??

Planning to get swimwear, shorts, dressy dress (for the cruise) and of course the timberlands! (will look groovy with the dress  )

Also, being the complete novice that I am....bought some suitcases,,,real cheap and one is HUGE! My sister (who travels loads) had said that the suitcases cannot be too big/heavy as the baggage staff refuse to handle them....is this right??!!!

Don't think that there would be a problem with the size of a suitcase, the bigger the better I would have said, get more in it on the way back - as long as you don't go over the weight limit you'll be fine! Clothes are an absolute steal over there, no need to take more than a handful of t-shirts as you can pick them up for next to nothing. I was disappointed with trainers when I went over, I expected to buy a few pairs but the majority were basbeball style which I'm not really into.

It depends on who you fly with.
Virgin say:
On Transatlantic, Caribbean and Nigerian routes we operate a piece system of allowance for checked in baggage.

Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 32kg (70lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in)

You need to verify with your carrier on how much you can take. As Obi Wan pointed out with Virgin, you can have two cases weighing upto 32kg each but other carriers have different rules & weight limits. Check with them to be sure.

As for buying stuff there, that's what we're doing. I'm taking a couple of pairs of shorts, 1 pair of trousers, a couple of t shirts and a sweater. Oh, and the obligitory M&S pants! I'll buy everything else out there and bring it back home. Thats also the beauty of staying in a villa though with full wasing facilities - we come home with very little washing to do!

If you can, just take enough clothes to cover all eventualities from scorching hot to freezing cold and wet - but plan on buying other stuff while you're there.

we take hardly anything with us, just enough to cover us for the first two days.

if you check the website of your airline it wil have details of the luggage allowances on there.

last time they put "Warning - heavy" tape on our suitcases on the way home!!!

I too am planning to buy lots of clothes and wear them as I go. I'm taking swimwear, a few shorts, t-shirts and vest tops plus a pair of jeans, one hoody and one pair of sandals for if we're just around hotel in the evening (not dressy ones), plus two pairs of trainers - one really old pair I intend to ditch on the way home. Husband and two boys are also going minimal as I plan to stock up for summer over there.

Hint in case you didn't know - if you buy clothes from Walmart and anything goes wrong you can take them back to Asda in the UK.

I'm also planning on buying a Disney towel each as a useful souvenir, so I'm not taking any towels with us other than a couple to line our old buggy.

Swimwear is quite expensive I find but much better quality and variety than over here. I always buy some. Smart casual is easy to find and so cheap. We tend to have a day at Florida Mall and hit JCPenney and Dillards.

Any bag over 25Kg should be marked 'Heavy'. This signifies that it is (for H&S reasons) a two man lift when handling.

I had a case marked "heavy 29kg" on a business trip once and no-one offered to help me lift it onto the weighing platform at check-in!
