Me the planner is thinking we should get trip insurance for our (first) trip in Jan to the world. I remember around the same time of Jan the BIG BLIZZARD in 96 (the year we married or I wouldn't have remember which year) where we were stuck in our homes for 3 days and EVERYTHING was closed in town and the roads weren't open but for servce people.

Well Dh thinks I am crazy and after the storms last year in Aug (in FL) I am thinking of overriding his thoughts.

So is it worth it? Does it usually cover the airfair and hotel or just parts of the prepaid stuff.

TIA!

I always get trip insurance when I have more money into the trip than I care to lose if something happens. For instance, if I have prepaid $3000.00 then I get trip insurance. If I will only lose $500.00 then I will take the chance. Most trip insurance (you need to check before you buy) will cover any costs that are non-refundable if you have to cancel (for certain reasons) plus reimburse you for days that you have to miss if your trip is interrupted. Read the fine print. Some insurance will pay the extra amount of booking an early flight home in case of interruption also. I'm sure some people on these boards can suggest some good companies. I usually use RBC and am very happy with them but I have read of some other good companies on these boards that I think might be cheaper.

I would recommend trip insurance atleast for the airline tickets. My family was suppose to be in WDW in March for our first ever trip but it just wouldn't be. I came down with a very bad case of pleurisy (outer lung infection). I am a very healthy 38 yr old woman who has never had a serious illness. LOL So of course I saw no reason to buy trip insurance, never needed before. Well luckily things ended up working out ok. Disney changed my room only reservation for me without any extra fee and American airlines waived part of our change fees, which they didn't have to do.
The moral of the story is that stuff happends and unless you are in a financial situation to be able to write of the expense that a cancelled trip would cost, then get the trip insurance. :earsboy:
We will be at WDW in 10 days, happy ending :cool1:

I should have shared my story of our trip to Scotland. We missed our connection in Toronto and the next flight didn't leave until the next night. Our insurance covered 1 day of the rental car that I wasn't able to use, 1 night of the hotel we weren't able to use, all of our meals and phone calls during the missed portion of our trip (while we were stuck waiting for the next flight) and it all added up to about $250.00. Nothing could replace our lost day but at least it didn't cost us anything.

Yes, we get trip insurance for every vacation we go on. It's a just in case thing that makes me feel better knowing I have.

I never have but may purchase it if I go for a few nites in Dec. Never know if we will get a snow storm up here in Boston or not.

I purchase it if the cost of the trip is a lot of money and if something were to happen - we would be out plenty. Our next trip is in Dec. and the price was $3000. so I definitely went with the insurance as winters in New England are not easy to predict.

I always do. It just makes me feel better and doesn't cost that much. Better safe than sorry!

Definately get trip insurance!!! I had never been seriously ill in 33 yrs. Three years ago we had a Disney Cruise scheduled and about $7500 already paid when I was diagnosed with cancer and had emergency surgery 1 week before we were to leave. Disney refunded everything!!!! We almost didn't get the insurance--I'm glad we did, you never know what can happen. It's only $89.90 and can save you thousands!!

Who do you book your trip insurance through- I'm looking for a reputable company. Disney only offers the insurace if you book a pkg thru them from what I've been told- I'm doing a la carte (renting DVC pts.) and buying tickets beforehand. Can anyone recommend a company and what type of insurance? Thanks!

yeah...what reeanna asked....I'm curious too. We didn't book through Disney either.

we booked thru AAA and got insurance for $68 and my health is terrible so it is really worth it.

The insurance offered by Disney might be available to you. Here is the two main phone numbers of the company suppling the ins. I got this off the pdf download of the ins I bought for my trip. Hope it helps.

Travel Guard International 1-800-826-3899

It also says that if you havent purchased the ins yet call your travel agent or call them at this number: 407.828.8101

The 800 number is the main cust. serv. number and is open 24hrs a day.
Its also the claim number.
