Usually we don't bother with trip insurance. But with taking a 7 night cruise we thought it would be a good idea to take the insurance this time. But after reading somewhere that you should check with your own health insurance and make sure your not paying for something twice. So I checked and my insurance does pay for out of the U.S. coverage. We would have to pay the amount up front and then our insurance would pay us back.

Would you still take out the trip insurance???? I just think it is a lot of money for a what if......

Also we are heading down a day earlier so there is a very slight chance we would ever miss the ships departure time.

Thanks,

Are getting ready to sail for the second time and used insuremy trip.com - mostly to insure against having to cancel for illness or death of family member. Our parents are over 70. Hope we don't need it but you never know. would not buy it through DCL due to cost!

There are just too many contingencies - so we do it, and then forget about it hoping we don't need it!

I would definitely buy it...... Hopefully you don't have to use it, but what if one member of the group becomes ill and can not travel?

I am considering buying it for other trips as well, because......

We were supposed to go on a trip last month but DD8 came down with pneumonia the day before we were to leave. He barely made it out of bed for the next 5 days, so there was no way we were going anywhere. The hotel was very understanding and refunded our entire deposit (even though they have a 14 day cancellation policy), but the airline wouldn't give me any break at all..... rescheduling our flights to April cost us over $600 more than the original price.... ouch!! If we had been going on a cruise and had no insurance we would have been out the entire cost of the cruise.... REAL ouch!!!!!!!!!

My 2 cents worth............ I think it's worth the peace of mind to have it.

I think the insurance is money well spent -- especially with the war going on. I personally can't afford to just "lose" the price of a cruise, and so many things could happen at the last minute!

We bought it. With all the sickness going around, we wanted to be safe.

We also took it out this time for our upcoming 7 day. We are bringing my DD19's two college roomates and I just felt better having it this time in case someone gets sick on an island. I want to be able to fly them to "real" hospital and not be treated in an island hosptial.

We booked online through Access America and the price was pretty reasonable for us. I think it costs the adults $37 pp. Much cheapter than DCL's at $99.

Yes,I took out insurance due to an existing heart defect. If I had waited to get the insurance later, it would not have applied for me because I already had the heart defects (causing 2 heart surgeries)before signing for the cruise. Better safe than sorry.

we have been on eight cruises and have bought insurance for all. only needed to use it twice, both times with luggage that didn't make it to the ship in time.but the insurance reimbursed us each time

We did not get insurance for our 3 or 4 day cruises, but plan to get it for next year's 7 day cruise. It's just too much $$ to waste in case anything happens!

I wasn't going to buy the insurance either, but I have decided I had better with all the things going on in the world today. I got a better rate from insuremytrip.com. Thanks for the link!

I get it all the time, not for if I get sick on the cruise...its more for if I get sick right before the cruise or if I have a death in the family....

Sure wish we had bought it but just never thought anything would happen as we are all healthy and our sons are 16 and 18. DS16 became ill about 2 weeks before our 7 day on the Magic scheduled for March 15 and doctor told us 2 days before we had to cancel as he had pneumonia and bronchitis. We have now re-scheduled for June but it cost us $900. in penalties and difference in rates to do so. I would definitely recommend it especially for a 7 day!

We have always bought cruise insurance and have had to use it twice because of illness.

Keep in mind that cruise insurance will not cover you, if you choose not to cruise because of the war.

I believe very strongly in insurance (life, health, disability, homeowners, auto, etc.) and this includes travel. There are always loopholes in policies and to read all the details will make me nuts, so I just pay the price and pray that I'll never need it!!!

I highly recommend it to everyone for all travel needs.

Yes, I am a trip insurance buyer for my cruises. Each cruise I take seems to cost at least $3000. The $150 or so for the insurance is well worth it. Most insurance companies do NOT cover medical problems outside of the U.S. If they do happen to cover it, they probably don't cover much of it. What if you have to be taken off of the ship in the middle of the ocean via helicopter. I doubt most insurance plans cover that, but some of the travel insurance plans do.

I usually don't buy insurance as my health insurance covers me (partially) outside US and I have American express medical evacuation coverage.

However by using insuremytrip.com you can choose from different policies. I found one that offered secondary coverage for medical and evac. My medical policy only pays 60% of out of network charges at the usual discounted rate. So this could really add up. The travel insurance will pick up where my medical policy leaves off.

My policy only cost $100 for a family of 3. This is quite a savings over Disney's rates, and it didn't duplicate what I already had.

With the savings on insurance, I contributed $200 to my "self insurance fund", which is a savings account I throw money into periodically. I use this whenever I'm offered extended warranties on electronics and such (which are better off thrown away than repaired). You'd be surprised at how many thousands of dollars this account will accumulate over the years.

My husband and I have been debating this matter for the past week. I checked with our health insurance company and they will cover us out of the county the same as in the country. The only difference being that we will have to pay for it and be reimbursed by them. They said they would also cover medi-vac as any other ambulance.

We are planning to fly down on Friday night and take a limo over on Saturday, so I am not that worried about missing the ship.

I am more concerned about someone getting ill before we leave and not being able to go. Does anyone know of a company that specialized in this type of coverage?

No offense, but you would be crazy not to buy insurance. There are loads of things that trip insurance covers that your health insurance does not. Here are some of them

If your flights are cancelled/delayed for some reason.
If DCL goes out of business. (Ok, unlikely)
If your luggage is lost.
If one of you gets sick before the cruise and can't go.
If someone in your family dies before the cruise and you don't want to go.
If something happens at home during the cruise and you want to leave.

And so on.

For the $150 bucks we paid on top of a $4500 cruise, it was cheap piece of mind.
