Do you buy Travellers Insurance??

You say you have coverage for medical outside the country from your work... if you buy travel insurance, be sure to investigate whether it's primary (you apply to them first, they pay everything, and you don't have to bother with your own coverage) or secondary (they will only pay for what your primary insurer won't cover). You could get a better deal (cheaper) by finding a policy that only offers secondary coverage. That's what I do, cause I also have Blue Cross that covers a lot out of the country. On the other hand, I'm envisioning the billing/paperwork nightmare I might end up in if I have to submit all those bills to TWO insurance companies and let them argue about who pays what!!!

Personally, I can't find an insurer who will write me JUST trip cancellation insurance. It always includes medical. Anybody have an insurer who will do just cancellation?

We got ours from td meloche monnex right off the TD website it is a years coverage and it was 70 or 80 bucks I think.

We have coverage thru Snowwhite's work for the whole family as part of her benefits. But even back in the day of Crappy jobs without benefits we ALWAYS bought blue cross or some other medical coverage cuz you just never know.... :confused3 .....Rob (Snowwhite's DH)

We always buy cancellation and medical insurance. Last year my husband broke his leg while at Typhoon Lagoon so you never know!! We discovered after that incident that our medical insurance through work covered everything so we didn't purchase additional medical insurance this time, just cancellation insurance. We purchased through Trent Medical. It insures your trip, luggage, etc.

I would not even putmy baby toe into the US without madical insurance.

NEVER NEVER NEVER...

Can you imagine paying for a broken leg for YEARS!!! That could be a long time. The cost is just too high...NO WAY!!!

I upgraded my VISA at the bank to a gold card that gives DH and I medical and trip cancellation coverage. It cost less to upgrade than to buy insurance each year for the 2 of us...Look into it at your bank.

Never lave home without medical. I have heard horror stories of people losing their homes to pay for medical bills.

Be safe, travel smart. :sunny:

Where do you buy the insurance from? How much does one adult run? (and i'm considering medical insurance. Cancellation I'm not too worried about.)

I used to have the same attitude as you - I'm going on holiday no matter what!

Then in May 2004, right before (okay, 3 weeks before) my partner in crime and I were taking off on holiday and he was in a terrible accident at work and spent a week in the hospital, had 2 surgeries to put his leg back together and we went no where and then couldn't afford to even do a weekend away until this year becuase of the $1700 we lost by cancelling and not having trip cancellation insurance.

I learned my lesson.

Try your credit card company for coverage, or a travel insurance company like Travel Guard. Prices vary depending on coverage.

Here's a vote for travel insurance! We went on a cruise in March and purchased insurance as we had grandparents who were not well.
Thankfully everyone stayed healthy but our flight to Fort Lauderdale was delayed by 13 hours. We missed our ship! The airline flew us to our first port and put us up in an all-inclusive for 2 days until our ship arrived. Upon returning home, we were reimbursed for 2 days of our trip - through our travel insurance. Also, my sister and her DH had their camera stolen on our first night on the ship and were fully reimbursed ($500) for it through travel insurance. We won't leave home without it.

I always, always recommend travel insurance. And now I have my own story to add to those of my clients:

This summer I went on my honeymoon. On the flight down there our NW flight was severely delayed - we ended up being rerouted through another city and even then we were delayed enough to miss our connecting flight. Fortunately NW did cover our hotel for that night, otherwise the travel insurance would have. The next morning we continued on to get to our cruise and lo and behold NW lost our luggage. They managed to deliver it at our first port of call, but in the meantime we'd been without our luggage from Saturday morning until Monday evening. In theory NW will pay for "a portion" of the items we had to purchase (ooh, a whopping $50), the travel insurance will pay for the rest of the items. NW counts the bags as missing from the time we were supposed to arrive on our rescheduled flight Sunday morning, the travel insurance counts them as missing from the moment NW took them into their possession, which gives us an extra day of allowance.

On the way back, after arriving in Minneapolis, our connecting flight was cancelled. They said it was because of mechanical difficulties, in reality it was probably because the flight was less than half full, and the next flight was also less than half full. If we'd been stuck overnight in MSP the travel insurance again would have picked up the costs.

Lessons from this 1 trip alone:
1) Always pack a change of clothes in your carryon
2) Crosspack your luggage with your travel companion, so that if 1 piece gets lost at least you still have some items
3) Always fly in the day before for a cruise, even during the summer when snow storm delays aren't a factor
4) ALWAY purchase travel insurance, because you never know what's going to happen.

Anyone who lives in Canada and goes into the States without medical insurance is NUTS!!! I used to work at a Travel Insurance company, let me tell you, some of the files I worked on was enough to scare the wits out of me. I remember one file I did was for like a 15 year old, healthy girl going down for a soccer tournament. She ended up getting appendicitis (sp?), and her hospital bill came to $16,000+ dollars, and that was more than 10 years ago! That is one small example. For some files we saw some medical bills come in at over $100,000. Please, please get medical insurance when visiting the States.

Hi guys,

I'm going to Disney next week and as most of you know I've been taking chemo for the last 6 months. My work insurance is not valid so I've been looking at getting some with a preexisting condition.

any ideas where I might find this.

Susan did you look at the TD travel medical insurance?

I have the Mosaik M/C and purchase it through them $49.00 for medical and $60.00 for travel. Carry it all year and just let it renew on its anniversary.

Hi Susan
I hope you have a great time in Disney. :wizard:
I went with CAA travel insurance. You may want to check into it. You could always call and ask them over the phone if they would cover you and what the cost would be. Of course, you'd have to buy a membership, but it may be worth it. Good Luck! :grouphug:

CAA wouldn't cover my dad who had heart surgery the last time the Jays won the World Series (yeah...that long ago). He had that strike against him and was of a certain age so they said no way.

He's going to take the insurance from TD Canada Trust.
