Do you bring laptops?

We got back last night from OKW and this was the first trip I took my laptop on. I needed to process our payroll Thursday night and it was so easy. Other than work it was real nice to bring up the local radar picture before heading out the door.

I went to Maine this weekend with my SIL. She was able to connect to WiFi at Fairfield Inn, no additional charge, which sort of makes me wonder why a Deluxe resort at WDW will charge for it. Additionally, we stopped for gas, coffee, etc a few times and when we were near a hotel, Holiday Inn, for one, the WiFi was easily accessed from the parking lot. Are there any locations such as that where WiFi is available in the lobby, etc by just " being there". ?

I guess we were on the same "wave length". ;)

I always bring my laptop. It helps to download my pictures from my camera and stay with the office.

Could someone clarify-is there a charge to use the Wi-Fi in the public area of a resort? How does that work?

Thanks, Safetymom. How fast (or slow!) is the dial-up? It's been years since I've had it. We use DSL...

I used the dialup at OKW in May, it was fine. It is slower than DSL but I mainly use it to keep up with mail and check the dis boards! Not worth $9.99 a day to me for high speed.

My husband brings his. We bring it to download digital pictures. We also use the internet access to catch up on world news, sports scores, check email, etc.

yep! One of the great things about the Swan/Dolphin. Access is included.

One of the best benefits of having internet access is being able to check your Photopass photos nightly!

we brought ours to download pictures everynight before bed. We have wireless but not paying for it while at disney.

OK, this is a pet peeve of my DF and myself. Just about all of the reasons I have read here are good and make sense. What really irks us is the guy {gal} sitting at the next table at wolfgang Pucks doing BUSINESS stuff. C'mon, how important can you be? Your on vacation, take a break, give your family a break. Business will still be there when you get back.
It's kind of like people with cell phones glued to their ears everywhere they go. At WDW, OK, contact the others in your party and tell them where you want to meet for lunch and stuff. But to walk around and talk about absolutley NOTHING. It kind of reminds me of the young kids smoking because they want to be cool. Sorry, it is no longer "cool" to talk on a cell phone. Everyone and his mother has a cell phone these days, and you are only annoying others around you. Whew.... Every so often I feel the need to rant!

Am I the only one AMAZED that not only is ALL DIS resorts NOT wifi, but also they charge you 9.95 for 24 hours!

This technology is soooooooooooooooooo relatively cheap to install and keep people connected!!!! I think the paper pads and pens they put in all rooms cost more!

Completely Agree!

The Majority of Hotels (in the country) are already WiFi enabled not just in common areas but also in rooms, and most charge you nothing. I don't get why Disney hasn't hopped on board yet.

It should be a standard in all disney resorts from value to deluxe.

We need to stay Connected! Dial-Up is Ancient!

We brought ours with us so the kids could watch DVDs in the car on the drive down. Access at the Swan was great, just like at home. We bought access for the first night at the Wilderness Lodge Villas and it stunk. Slower than dial-up. We didn't get it after that and DW was seriously bummed out.

I wondered when some1 would ask this question cause i always wonderin if it was worth takin it.

I guess yall answered my question.

Wi fi is not free at WDW. There is a 4.95 an hour charge or a 9.99 charge for the day.

I stay at many hotels during the year where it still isn't free. They have come a long way in the last several years. Within the next year all of the resorts are supposed to have high speed internet.

Mitros, you make many excellent points. I have a cell phone and never turn it on in public. I figure that if I don't like listening to other people's conversations, they won't like listening to mine. I also don't use it while I drive.

As to why I will be bringing my laptop with me on vacation, this vacation is just for me and my kids. Since my husband has to stay home on the West Coast, and my vacation is several weeks long, I promised him that I would send him photos and videos of the kids at least a few times a week. That way he could see and hear what we're doing, and know that we're happy and safe.

I am actually in the Midwest right now with my daughter, and we're visiting my parents. I purchased my laptop a few days before I left home. It is working out beautifully. I have already sent my husband and son a few videos of my daughter riding a motorized scooter for the first time (talk about hell on wheels ;) ), my nephew hitting a double during his baseball game, and a few surfers riding the waves on the lake. I can't wait to take the laptop with me to WDW. It will be fun to send my husband video from my balcony at the AKL, from the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon, from the deck of a Water Taxi, and the front cab of a Monorail. And if he's real lucky, I'll send him video of the two kids arguing. That will REALLY make him feel like he's with us on vacation (and dang happy that he's not).

Just a reminder to bring along your ethernet cable for hooking up in your room! Bring a long one so that you can sit on the bed while connected! :flower:
