I don't know too many people who say "axe" instead of ask, but one night on the phone Maggie did say she heard the new Springsteen song "The Shining" and thought of me. . .

I didn't quite know how to take that. . .

ASK, ASK, ASK!! (The Chicago mispronunciation for ASK is said AKS, sounds the same as Axe but, I spell it different) Like Robin said ~ The "S" goes beFORE the "K"!!! That's how I spell it but, I NEVER SAY IT!!!

It drives me nuts when people say "axe". I ask. My mother and I have a running joke about what she had for "breftuss". Even she doesn't know where she got that one.

Oooooo, this is one of my pet peeves! It drives me insane when people say "axe" when they really mean "ask." You ASK someone a question and you chop wood with an AXE. It's not that difficult, people.

Ask for me too, but I do have a friend from Dallas that says axe and a whole bunch of other words that are a little off like that, she even types/spells it the way she says it.

Now I have to admit, I am a libary girl and I do "warsh" my clothes. (And I alway spell them the correct way, not as in above).

I guess it all boils down to where you are from and what you grew up with.

AuntBJ - My grandmother grew up in Medina, NY. I know there are such things as butter beans, but I thought they were completely different than yellow beans. Grandma also called all cats 'she' and all dogs 'he'.

I think it's a tongue twister for some reason. I don't know if it's when people are talking fast or what. Aks as opposed to Ask. I think it just comes out. If you listen to Billy Joel's "Don't Ask Me Why," you'll hear him say it in one place. Other than that, I think he says it correctly. It jumps out at me every time I hear that song.

My husband says "acrosst." What is THAT?? I'm glad other people have heard it, now I don't think he's such a goon!

By the way, I also get scared or afraid, but never ASCARED.

I ask. I also hang a picture on the wall, not a pitcher; that's something you put water in. And it's a wolf, not a woof. A wolf may woof, but it's still a woLf. And I also hate, "Where's it at?" Where is it is sufficient. I think we are just lazy with the Enlish language.

We have an Austrailian music director at church, and he puts an "r" at the end of names that end in 'a". Like Amander or Savanner, instead of Amanda or Savannah. It drives me crazy. But, other than that, he's fun to listen to.

BTW - My biggest pet peeve is over on the Cruise Line Board where so many people refer to the restaurant up on deck 9 as "Palo's". It does not belong to Palo. The restaurant's name is simply "Palo". That's the end of my restauRANT.

to hear someone say "axe" instead of "ask!" You can practically see his blood pressure rise when he hears it!!
I remember my Grandma used to say "K-Mark" for the "K-Mart" store where she shopped, and "Topperware" for the "Tupperware" she put her leftovers in.
And there is one newscaster on our local news that has problems pronouncing certain words and it drives ME nuts! Like when she says "mail" or "male" she doesn't say either with the long "a" sound, but rather says "mell". "Details" is another one, she doesn't use the long "a" sound, but more like "detells." And the other day instead of saying "pattern" with an "urn" sound on the second syllable...(duh, did I spell syllable right?) she said it like "pat-er-en." I just about screamed!!! I have been sooooo tempted to e-mail her about it, but can't bring myself to...although if she's going to be a newscaster one would think she should know how to properly pronounce her words!!!
