Do y'all have this in your towns?

The people in my apartment complex are crazy cart thieves. They even take the flat bed carts from Ikea and Best Buy. I often see carts from stores that would be an hour walk+.

That said I can see why stores don't do the 25 cent deposit thing. When one of the stores in my area got the 25 cent carts my grandmother just used one of the free baskets, you can fit a heck of a lot less groceries in a basket! I'm not in the best of health so I avoid those stores completely, its one more thing deal with, and I don't have to at the other stores. Just before Christmas I went to Michaels planning on dropping more than $600, when I saw that they had installed tall hooks on the carts so that they remained in the store, I only dropped about $5 and made do with purchases from White Rose and the grocery store.

the only one's i have seen do that in our area is the child cart type carts. those that have Barney, Wiggles, etc
they lock up at the register. you have to transfer food purchased to another cart or just carry out the bags without a cart.

We've had these for ages! And years.

I wonder if Los Angeles is just a mecca for homeless people who live in carts. Oh, wait. We are.

We don't have them yet but I would love to see it. What I would really love to see is at the Sears in the mall. Our Sears has the shopping carts and people take them out of there and walk the mall with them. It's a pain in the rear at Xmas when the mall is packed as it is and you have to dodge carts too.

As for the quarter at Aldi's, usually if you are shopping at Aldi's you're trying to save some money. A quarter is enough incentive to take it back. Plus ours aren't that big (store or parking lot), not that far of a walk to take it back.

And if you don't want to walk it back, there is always someone else that will and get your quarter!

I also like Aldi's way of keeping track of their carts, with a quarter deposit that you get back when you return the cart to the store.
We don't have the first part but we used to have a Bradlees that used the quarter deal. DH used to walk around the entire parking lot when we pulled in collecting carts. He averaged a dollar for every trip. He was the best cart person around!! :rotfl:

Yep we have them in a few stores, Winco and Target are the ones that come directly to my mind. They started roughly 5-6 years ago around here.

wow! i haven't seen this yet. but then I've never noticed a lot of stray carts around town either. They problebly don't bother with it unless and until they lose $X amount of carts per location.

Shopping carts cost $500-$600 each? Crazy. So these two old Ames shopping carts on my back patio aren't really the junk everyone says they are, huh?!

The Target in our mall has locking wheels so that you can't take the carts out into the mall... I think that Sears does this too.

Yep. The local small store just installed that. We're right on the edge of downtown, and lots of people will just snag a cart to walk home with their groceries instead of lugging them by hand.

Also there's a high school a block away (the high school where they filmed 10 Things I Hate About You), and from reputation as well as watching these teenagers (I sometimes make the mistake of going nearby for a coffee just as school lets out), I imagine those teens stole more than their share of carts from that store!

So it's probably really smart that the store finally installed the cart system.

I just got back from the mall with the youngest son. We witnessed two teenage boys (14) and they had two of the Sears carts and were doing "demolition derby" with them in the corridor to the food court. I bet if the Sears mgmt saw that, they might be considering those locks.

Yes, we had those for about a year. My clueless hubby who just does not pay attention to the signs had a cart loaded and was parked a bit far away from the store, was actually riding the cart to his vehicle before I could warn him about crossing the while line...it sure locked and I had so much fun watching him trying to figure out what happened :lmao: Wish I had that on video!
