These may have been around for a long time, but today was the first day I noticed it. And I actually saw it at two different stores, at different parts of town. There was a sign at the edge of each parking lot explaining that the shopping carts were now equipped with an electronic device that will cause the wheels to lock up if they leave the parking lot. What a great idea! It's about time they came up with a way to stop people from stealing or just pushing them out to the bus stop three blocks away from the store.

I also like Aldi's way of keeping track of their carts, with a quarter deposit that you get back when you return the cart to the store.

I predict that they will find a lot of carts at the edge of the parking lot due to curious people that wanted to see if it really locked the wheels :rotfl2:

Walmart and Sams have them here DS and I were trying to figure out how it works. Not that we had any intention of stealing one or anything LOL but we're a curious bunch. :rotfl2:

There are a few stores in our area that have this feature.

It DOES work.

We don't have them at any places here where I live, but I have seen them before.

I have only seen it at one of the Walmarts in our area. If they are at all of them the signage isn't as obvious.

Around here you have to insert 1Euro (a coin). A quarter would not motivate me to return it.

I haven't come across this yet...but I'm very intrigued. It's like invisible fencing for carts instead of dogs.

Yep, they have that here at Winn Dixie, Publix and Walmart! And having two children with scientific minds, we had to test it. :rolleyes1

It works! :thumbsup2

And then we returned the carts to the corral.

The only place I've seen these is a local Target that is connected to a mall.

There are a set of metal-detector-looking devices inside the store near the entrance to the mall and signs saying that the carts have electronic locking wheels. You can take them out to the parking lot, but you cannot take them into the mall.

The Krogers I go to had them installed on all shopping carts about a year ago. This Krogers is right across the street from several apartment complexes and it was common to see their shopping carts all over the place.

The locking device obviously works. I no longer see the carts outside of the parking area (I occasionally see a turned-over cart right at the edge of the parking lot).

Interestingly, when Kroger announced they were fitting all of their shopping carts with this device some people protested, saying that it discriminated against the poor and homeless, since they relied on the shopping carts to tote their groceries either back to their apartment or house (having no car), or to tote their personal belongings around the streets. Krogers basically said 'tough tootie', noting that each shopping cart cost in excess of $600.00.

My DH is a grocery store manager and all the stores in his chain have these. You would be amazed by how many people take the shopping carts to walk home. At the store where my DH worked in high school they used to have to go pull carts out of a pond just past the parking lot where people would dump them. :sad2: The carts cost about $500 each so stores lose lots of $$$ in carts every year.

LOL, they have that at a newer WalMart in my area! There are ALWAYS a line of left carts at the edge of the area!! :lmao:

I saw them in the Chicago area over the summer at a Target. They are a PITB. we parked in what appeared to be the Target parking lot but the silly cart didn't think so and the wheels locked. I had to move my car to the cart in order to load my full cart worth of items .

We don't have them yet but I would love to see it. What I would really love to see is at the Sears in the mall. Our Sears has the shopping carts and people take them out of there and walk the mall with them. It's a pain in the rear at Xmas when the mall is packed as it is and you have to dodge carts too.

As for the quarter at Aldi's, usually if you are shopping at Aldi's you're trying to save some money. A quarter is enough incentive to take it back. Plus ours aren't that big (store or parking lot), not that far of a walk to take it back.
