We've dedicated the Labor Day Weekend to getting the camper ready for our trip to Ft. Wilderness next month. I'm a huge list maker so I'm making one for things we need to buy. Do you grill on the FW grills? How about a grill topper? I don't want to overdo it but the idea of the FW grills kind of bothers me. Hubby will be okay with whatever.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Jennifer

We always take our own grill grate wherever we go. Wal-Mart sells them for a couple of bucks.

We've done both. On our first trip to the Fort in 1998, in our then brand new motorhome, we had nothing. We were newbies. I'm not sure we even remembered charcoal and it was then that we made our first trip to the trading post! LOVED THAT! I think I spent the kids college fund decorating our MH. Anyway, we used the grills there and have since had an array of portable gas and charcoal grills over the years. They make them very space efficient these days.

You don't want to know what the otters do on the grates that Disney leaves there! Better use your own!

We have used them. They are pretty deep with adjustable height grill. So you can sear or slow cook. One bag of instant lite charcoal can get you thru 3 meals. The heat will burn off any otter remains. Now if your in a rainy period..our weber q200 is the ticket. With 3 growing boys I need a lot of grill area and the even heat of the"q" is great for not burning all to h@ll foods.

Are you saying that you just bring a grate and use it on the FW grill? Any idea what size it should be? Thanks.

We always use our Weber Q and power it off of the RV LP tank

I don't want to use propane-we prefer the taste with charcoal. I guess I was thinking about some sort of topper that would sit on the FW grill. Does anything like that exist?

Hubby says we have a travel grill from tailgating. I'm going to see if it's worth packing up to bring. I'm afraid we're going to have to reserve another site just to hold our junk!

Wal-Mart sells a cheep charcoal grill for about $9.95. I wouldn't use the Disney grill but that up to you

When I fire up the charcoal grill I use enough starter fluid to burn off any contamination and then I brush it with a wire brush. I have used the FW grill many years ago..

Thanks everyone!

Hubby just came home and doesn't like "open-fronted" grills so we're bringing the tailgating one. It appears that "we" are grill snobs after all.

I now use my RVQ when Rving and the taste of charcoal is mainly from the drippings from what you are cooking onto the coals. You can get this exact same flavor by using a drip covering over the LP burner where the drippings fall on that and are then "burnt" for a better word providing that charcoal flavor via the smoke that is created. It's not the charcoal that is providing the flavor and in fact you can actually get a lighter fluid flavor imparted to things like the more delicate fish (Tuna and sole/flounder are very suspectible) especially which won't happen with a gas grill. Just like with a real charcoal you can even use Mesquite/Hickory/Apple whatever chips on that drip covering on an LP grill for that added flavor. You have to learn how to use both types of grills. Now for slow cooked BBQ you can't beat the charcoal method for the low indirect smokey cooking.

Now at home I just find the good old charcoal grill the best and my large webber is still going strong 20+ years later.

Charcoal is king in all places. I use a newspaper fired coal starter to avoid the fuel contamination. My Weber is the best but I can make the Forts grilles suffice with a little re-imagineering.

Yep, no lighter fluid for hubby either. I've wasted everyone's time. It appears that DH has already given this issue a serious amount of thought. I don't tailgate (Love tailgating, can't stand the games!) anymore and had no idea of the technical advancements that have been made in that particular arena.

Sorry!

Weber Smokey Joe is my portable grill of choice! But we too have used the grills on sight,I will say they are in much better shape than almost any place else.

We never have been to a tent site or had a motor home there but we did stay in a cabin and I used the grill everyday, it was pretty clean and the flame would burn off anything that was not clean. We used the self lighting charcoal which was easier.

At home I use a Green Egg grill I think it is the best charcoal grill on the market. But at 65pound I don’t need the extra weight in the TT. You are right charcoal gives a much better flavor than gas.

I've used the grills at the Fort. I wad up a big piece of aluminum foil and scrub off the grate after the fire has gotten to that perfect cooking coals stage. Then just to be safe, I use a disposable grate cover you can pick up at Wally World, Home Depot, Lowes. I've even seen them at Publix. We have a small, portable table top gas grill, but sometimes, I've gotta have that charcoal flavor!

One reasons I don’t use Disney grills are I think the bars in the grate are to far apart. One time I was cooking burgers I lost 2 of them thought the grate. You can fix this by going to any store that sells grills and get a fish cooker for grills. It is a fine mesh basket that goes right on top of the grate.
