Do We Own Our Threads?

I was going to respond to the OP, but she doesn't want to be flamed for her boring topic, so instead I'd rather talk about the mighty mongoose.

I can talk mongoose!

You want to know how stupid I am? (I'm telling on myself again...) I thought that mongoose were birds and was surprised when I googled and found these cute little critters. :rotfl2: I miss my "Laugh every day, even if it is at yourself" tag!

Yeah...umm...the wings are hidden under the fur, and they fly when they feel threatened. But they don't feel threatened too often, because they're the mighty mongoose. I think they're in the eagle family.

I agree with you on all this, and I know I have "abandoned" threads before. I do try to at least thank people for their replies, but sometimes I do just get busy and feel strange replying on a thread no one else has replied on for a day or two.

Also, if I start a just-for-fun thread, like "Who is your favorite actor" or something, I don't neccessarily post again, though I do enjoy reading the responses.
If I were you, I wouldn't worry, eventually your abandoned posts will get bumped up offering you that opportunity once again. ;)

disneymom3, in your case you were basically venting, which I think people should recognize (and I did respond to you nicely, BTW :teeth: ).

Yep, I know you did. As did Christine and Missy. Urrr, maybe I am guilty of that whole not responding to everyone thing :scared1: Sorry!!

Those mongooses (or is it mongeese??? ) are really creeping me out. I hated Rikki Tikki Tavi as a kid. For that matter I still do! As I recall, I think he was supposed to be good, but I never bought that story. :sad2: I would very easily believe they are hiding wings under there. They are clearly not trustworthy!

No you were fine. You don't *have* to respond to everyone. Just pop in every now and again so people know your reading. Seemed like you were doing that.

There is nothing that peeves me more than a poster who starts a thread and then either rarely comes back or never comes back. There are a few that routinely do this and I can't stand it.
I do that.

When I ask a question, I say thank you in advance, and if I've got an answer, I don't like to bump the thread back up. Apologies if I've annoyed anyone by doing that, I had no idea it bothered anyone.

WRT the original question, no I don't think anyone owns a thread any more than anyone owns a spoken conversation. Just like any conversation, one on-topic comment will generate a response that is slightly off-topic, then another (and so on, and so on...) and pretty soon you're talking about refillable mugs in a thread that started off about getting an AR for CRT. To me, that's no big deal, that's just how conversations progress.

I also don't like it when the OP or the mods decide that a "thread has run it's course" and close it down. To me, if people are still posting, it hasn't run it's course yet. :confused3

You know Aggie, I forgot about that one. Glad none of mine met that demise :rotfl:

thew orginal poster owns them for 3 hours

To be honest, on all but the simplest of questions, if someone thanked the posters ahead of time and I thought they weren't going to come back for even a drive by thank you, I'd be less likely to post. I don't mind someone not responding to me or not returning to a thread if it's in the body of a thread, but I think the OP of a thread has a duty to at least return occasionally. But I do tend to thank people ahead of time and then still come back and thank again, so I suppose I would think an OP is just doing that. :teeth:

AHA!!! So, that's why I'm so invisible! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think when a poster starts a thread knowing its a hot button and will likely cause a debate and abandons it, that causes some trouble, I can think of one person that does that habitually and no, not anyone that responded. I think I personally get miffed with this poster as he knows what he is doing, abandons, and then will get mad when people go off topic. :offtopic:

Sorry, but I agree with T&B. I don't like it if the OP doesn't ever come back to say if the responses were helpful or on target or what have you.

I used to be on a BB where the moderator closed down a thread any time it went off topic at all. Even the whole one comment led to another kind of a thing. If it was OT from the OP at ALL, she would close it. It was so annoying I gave up posting there at all. Overall I think the mods here to a pretty fine job. I hear there is dissent about that on the trip reports board though. :rotfl:

 You figured it out! :teeth:

disneymom3, I need to go read that thread on the trip reports board! Sounds like a live one! :cool1:

Pop Daddy, why didn't you tell me about my 3 hours within the 3 hour window? :rolleyes2

Tigger&Belle said:
PhD, you haven't done anything for me to hold a grudge against....yet, have you? :teeth:

Missy, sometimes people will read what they want into a thread. Some people will skip over the details and assume things, which I think is what happened to disneymom3 and probably you.

Coming back after many hours away. Which is probably another reason why threads get abandoned. I cheat & read (& sometimes post) while at work. Then I leave the office at 4:30, train ride home, dinner, dishes, etc. & sometimes I'm not back on until 8 or later.

T&B, I do think that's what happened to me. But I'll tell you, I don't post vents much anymore! I do love to read them however. :rotfl2:

When I do vent, it's more with posters I already "know" (ie in the "clique" type threads). They will give sympathy or will laugh at me, or some of both ;) , but they won't seriously rake me over the coals when they know I'm not up to it.

That would be annoying. Threads, like conversations in real life go in different directions. Heck people (myself included) are easily distracted. Life goes off topic, either redirect it, or enjoy the ride! ;) Sometimes off topic takes us to much better places then the intended destinations.
