Do upgrades ever happen?

I don't understand, why is it controversial to ask this question? It sounds like a legitimate question, I always wondered how that worked when you were there on points as opposed to a cash ressie. The OP probably didn't return because the responses got a a little snarky.:goodvibes

Interesting, because I didn't see any "snarky" comments at all. I saw a lot of posts explaining why it seldom happens. The truth is, if someone was on the waitlist and didn't get what they wanted and someone came to the resort the same date and requested and got an upgrade out of the blue, it isn't fair. Perhaps that person was waitlisted from before the 7 month window too. It happens. Timeshares are set up to have very little "upgrades", and the only way it happens is if there is a maintenance issue or something else.

LOL, I didn't take offense to anyone's responses. I just didn't reply back because I have just been reading the posts.

No worries to anyone that thought the repsonses were "snarky". :lmao:

I wasn't looking for a free handout from Disney, I was just curious. The reason I even asked the question is that we will be staying in Kidani Village on opening night, and I was hoping that we might get a view upgrade. But if we don't, it's not the end of the world. Just my curiousity since I highly doubt they will be at capacity that night.

I used to work at a high end resort in Orlando, and we would upgrade views all the time if we had availablity, before the guest would even ask. I wasn't sure how Disney's system works with upgrades since this will be our first DVC stay.

I would never ask for an upgrade, I guess I don't have the guts to, not that it is something that takes a lot of courage. We actually don't even put in room requests other than a crib. Again, just curious.

Thank you to everyone that posted replies :).

Was the resort you worked at a timeshare? If so, it must have often had vacancies if it did upgrades. DVC doesn't often have empty rooms or at least rooms that aren't already in someone elses inventory.

No, it wasn't a timeshare. It is a regular hotel. They didn't often have a whole lot of vacancies, but everyone that came in was always given the best view available, regardless of what they booked. I think it was to keep them wanting to come back...

We were upgraded once at Vero Beach from a standard view Inn Room to a 1bdrm. villa due to a leaky toilet and a noisy air conditioner. Didn't ask to be upgraded just asked for maintenance. We were very happy.

Well, it's quite different at a hotel. Folks coming in don't "own" a part of the hotel like we do with timeshares.

Thanks for asking!! I found it interesting reading too!!

I was also surprised at the amount of upgrades, I need to ask for an upgrade at check-in but am willing to use the extra points if it is available. I booked my trip last minute and took whatever I could get and am darn happy about it.

Thanks again I am a little new to this too so any info I can gather I am loving!!:)

Upgraded once from studio to 1 Br at SSR - on points.

good point, I didn't think about the ownership part.

Just learning lots of new things :).

But, don't every give up on it...we checked into the BCV yesterday for my birthday trip and we booked a studio. What a great birthday gift they gave me by upgrading us from a studio to a 2 bedroom villa! It's in the location where I requested too! Definitely "magical". Never expected this at the BCV! What a great resort too, talk about being "completely" spoiled rotten!!:goodvibes
