Do transferred points have a banking deadline?

I just spoke to MS as I transferred in some points. I transferred in a February Use Year which means that the points would have to be banked by July 31st. One of the Supervisors at MS just told me that transferred points can be banked whenever as long as it's before they expire. So, these points expire 1/31/2012....which I was told that technically I can bank them the day before and they'll then go to my 2012 UY and expire in 2013. Does this sound correct? Do transferred points really not follow the same banking rules and can be banked at any time?

that does not sound right.

though transfer points would expire if not used this year????

When I transferred in points, I was told that the banking deadline for the points was the date it should have been.

I don't think I would trust that you can bank beyond the deadline.

Transferred points retain the banking rules of the UY that the come from. If they are Feb 2011 points, they will need to be banked by Sept 30, 2011. They will then be good for use from 2/1/12 through 1/31/13. July 31 is the banking deadline for a Dec UY.

Last I knew transferred points could be banked up until the last day of the UY and were not subject to the 4 month lead time. Of course it could change at any time but they'd have to change the POS to do so I believe.

As Dean stated, I know this "was" the case a while back because I was able to bank transferred points in this manner.

I really am not sure if this changed after the "4-month" rule. I had transferred points (after their normal banking deadline) before the rule change. I sure would like to know for sure.

I don't have time to review this but the last time I looked at the POS with this very question in mind, I came away with the best interpretation being what I stated above. I also feel that the technical way the POS is currently written, the one transfer could be interpreted as per member rather than per contract. That means that it's possible they could limit transfers to one for any given ownership even if different masters. This is an area where DVC would have total control though.

My experience too is that transferred in points just have a 2 year life without banking. I had points transferred into one of our memberships and wanted to make a specific reservation that would require the points to be "banked". I called to do this and was reassured there was no need to bank, I could just call at the appropriate time to make the reservation and these points would be usable. Sure enough they were.

However, if I were to do this again, I would again call before what would be the banking deadline of these points. I would tell MS when I intend to use the points and ask if these points will be usable. I would document the time and date of the call as well as the MS cast member's name.

We're fairly new. Out of curiosity, why have points transferred in if you don't have a use for them in mind?
Is this in the event that a post-transfer situation brings about a cancellation that leads to needing to bank?

It's generally a bad idea to transfer if you don't have a plan and for a single owner, DVC is unlikely to give flexibility without a plan that necessitates that flexibility.

Thank you, Dean. Nearly 25,000 posts? I'll know who to ask going forward when I have DVC questions!
