Do the magnets get stolen?

We had a magnet walk away. Family members saw it a couple of doors down and knocked on the door to inquire. The people whose cabin it was on were clearly unaware of how it got there and incredibly apologetic.

I'd say, unless you have really cool magnets, they aren't being stolen, just relocated. As I was a kid once, I can understand how a group of kids walking around might think it was funny to do this. With that in mind, I won't put out anything I'd be heartbroken to lose.

I have no doubt that the magnets are often just relocated, but in our case they were simply stolen. A couple of nights after they went missing our 17 yr old couldn't sleep (we were on the Iceland cruise - still light at 2AM). He walked every single deck and looked at each and every door. Extreme, I know but he was bored (Vibe had closed) and couldn't sleep so thought he'd give it a shot. Our magnets were no where to be found, though he did sleep soundly afterward :rotfl:. It wasn't that big of a deal, really, just annoying. I've never been really into decorating the door anyway, but for this cruise for some reason my son wanted to bring some magnets. We were in the Outer Banks a few weeks prior to the cruise, so we picked up some magnets. We probably had the only OBX themed door on the ship! In hindsight that's probably why they walked away.

We've never had one stolen, to my knowledge. And we've had some pretty cool ones on our door!

My advice would be only to put up magnets that you wouldn't be sad to lose if they disappeared.

We had some really cool ones made for us as part of the FE that we wanted to keep. They were personalized to us. Someone stole them. I don't know why unless the people who stole them had our same first and last names - and that would have been really, really odd. It was quite sad (I wouldn't say it ruined out cruise, but it was a big bummer).

6 doors down from us was a big sign that said 'To whoever stole our magnets, please return them". So I assume they had theirs stolen too.

That was the first time we had ever seen it.

I just bought a really cute magnet for our first DCL trip next month with a "Halloween on the High Seas" theme. Then I read in a FB group that the magnets get stolen a lot. Hope that's not the case! Thanks

Anything that anyone leaves in public could be taken.

We had 2 magnets stolen off of our door on one of our cruises. The door had many magnets on it, but 2 were stolen from the center of our door. I had other magnets with me so I just filled in the space. We found the magnets on a door down the hall so I took them (they had our name on them) and put them back on our door. Next morning, those same 2 magnets were gone again from our door, out of all the magnets on the door. I'm not sure this was something a kid would do. I could always reprint the magnets so it didn't ruin our cruise, but it was certainly sad to think that there was someone on the cruise doing this.

Another time, the person across the hall commented on a magnet I had on the door and how she'd like to find one like that for her sister. It disappeared the day before the cruise ended. Just that one magnet. Coincidence?

I had two magnets stolen within an hour of putting them on our door on our first cruise this month. Fortunately they were returned the next day, but it kinda put me off on putting magnets on our door on any future cruises. In fact I noticed many undecorated doors on our deck and it left me wondering ....

I think it's pretty low even if it's kids or teens "just messing around" as well. They are still taking something that doesn't belong to them and the result is exactly the same, you end up missing magnets.

I agree...you shouldn't touch other people's property no matter your age.

We have had a few "sail away". My theory: Do not put anything on the outside of your door that you want to absolutely keep. If it is special in anyway, stick it inside the cabin somewhere.

No, I don't think it's a coincidence. I think that lady found one for her "sister".

We've had magnets taken, and also had them relocated to the next cabin door (it happened to be my families). We've also had messages wiped off our dry erase board (messages were also written - innocuous things, smiley faces, hello). We've also found some of our magnets on the floor several doors down.

Now I twist-tie my FE and bring a small pair of scissors to cut off when we leave, and I keep the magnets on the inside. It may seem like a small thing, and it most likely is children, but it can be upsetting. Nothing to ruin a cruise over though.

This happened to us! Only on the next door!

OMG! It is very disheartening to think an adult would do that! Sorry that happened to you!

We've also had a personalized magnet "relocated" to next door. I suspect it was undisciplined and unsupervised kids as I've seen them do other pranks - like stuffing an ice cream cone into an unlocked bag the night before disembarkation, writing stupid (and rude) remarks on white boards, turning magnets upside down or rearranging them, etc. One FE group experienced their FE being moved to different doors.

We don't decorate our door, but there was a cabin a few doors down from us that had the Mickey-in-pieces magnet set on theirs. I would walk past this door multiple times a day and noticed one day that some of the pieces were missing. I found them on our door so I moved them back to their owner's.

If nothing else, this should serve as a warning to make sure kids and anyone else who might "get lost" know the cabin NUMBER and not just plan to look for magnets on the doors.

I only mention that because I've seen more than one person in discussions of decorating doors state that their reason for doing so is they are traveling with an elderly parent who can be forgetful or children who will have more freedom for the first time and the decorations will make it easier for them. If the decorations are the ONLY way they are learning to identify the room, it will create much more stress if those magnets are moved/removed - which can happen.

Good reminder! My 12yo had to ask a CM for help on embarkation day on our last cruise. On the drive to the port, she was repeating our stateroom number, trying to commit it to memory. That afternoon, right after we'd gotten our checked luggage, she asked if she could go to the pool deck to get ice cream while I was putting some stuff away. I didn't even think twice to remind her of the stateroom number. Well, I hadn't put up our magnets or FE yet and she forgot the stateroom number. But at least she knew who to go to to find out.

Out of 10 cruises, we have decorated our door 8 times. Once our door got completely cleaned off of all our magnets, including ones that were special to me (with Eeyore). On another cruise one or two went missing. So now we decorate with generic copies of pictures/characters that we can reproduce should they get stolen, and we put the special magnets on the inside of our cabin door for us to see.

I guess I had put too much faith in humanity that this stuff was more prank and less downright theft as my own experience suggested. We wouldn't ever be devastated if a magnet walked away, but that doesn't excuse the behavior. If it is important and/or irreplaceable, it'll stay in the cabin or at home.
