Do the cruise photographers take outdoor photos?

Hello. I’m trying to decide if the photo package is worth it. I see pics of people indoors in front of the artificial backdrops. Are the photographers frequently outdoors? Can it be requested? Any pics at the railing, at sunset, daytime anytime- anywhere really, on the beach in Mexico? Thank you in advance.

You can set up special photo sessions. Costs extra, not included in packages.

That said, there have been photographers on deck on special days (Panama Canal day, Alaska glaciers). And we had DCL photographers along with us on some excursions on our Med cruise. We also had our picture taken by a roving photographer on Castaway Cay.

But, generally, it's just the set up photo locations onboard, and on Castaway Cay.

From the photography link:
  • You can even arrange a private portrait session, if you wish!

Thank you for replying.
Is it difficult to get a photo when they’re outside on the special days? I’m thinking of the photographers in front of the castle at Disneyland and the mob scene to get a photo there. Possible but there’s no way I’d get my family to wait for it then to smile, etc.

Will every cruise have a special day? Would the the arches at Cabo be considered a special day?

As a guess I'd say, no, Cabo isn't a special day.

When they're out on deck, they are just walking around taking pictures of random people, no set back ground. No line ups. Much like the roving photographers in the dining rooms.

That’s awesome that they are on deck for the Panama Canal crossing.

Great question by the way.

I have very rarely seen them outdoors. In fact the only time I can remember is on Castaway Cay. I think you can buy the package prior to your cruise for the discount and then get a refund if you don't use it? Hopefully someone can confirm that. We've had the flip side TWICE...didn't buy the package and then ended up with so many photos that we bought it on board without a discount.

Thanks to everyone who responded! Pictures outside while leaving port sound great! I will keep that in mind. Good idea to take advantage of the discount before the cruise. I will do that. Will the photographers take pics with your phone or camera for you? Or is it like Disneyland where they don’t handle your camera?

Do you tip the photographers if they're roaming and you ask them for a photo?

No.

You can purchase any package (either pre-cruise or once onboard) and, if you don't want to get enough pictures for the package to be worth it to you, you can cancel the package and the credit is charged to your onboard account. One thing, you must do the cancellation by the last full day onboard (you can't do it debarkation morning).

It depends on the cruises. On the Mediterranean cruise in 2013, we saw photographers at the Vatican taking pictures. We didn’t buy the photo package that time so we passed. We were on a DCL excursion. I believe the photographer was with us and there was a person hired by DCL to cut paper silhouette as we were walking along with the tour guide for free. That’s a nice Disney touch and a great souvenir. On the Alaskan cruise in 2015, characters were out on the deck for photo taking on Tracy Arm day. We bought the photo package that time and took lots of pictures. Check the personal navigator for outdoor photo opportunities.

Thank you for your replies! Great to know they are sometimes outside and on excursions. The paper silhouettes sound great. I’d love that. Thank for letting us know to cancel prior to the last day. Wouldn’t have otherwise known that either!
