Do teachers still get paid if you don't renew your contract?

Okay this might be a stupid question but hey I am new to teaching!

I have decided that I am not going to renew my contract (assuming that I get one) at my current school. Our district pays us our salary divided by 12 months. So if I do not continue to work for the district, will I still be paid for the last two months of my contract?

I would assume so. You typically are paid for your 185 days but the school holds a portion of that to pay you over the summer. The bigger question might be when your medical insurance would end.

If you worked your full 9/10 months(what ever was determined in your contract), you will get your full salary.

I assume they will close you out and give you everything in a lump sum, any unused vacation days and such.

You'll get paid until the end of your current contract :). How they handle that...I have no idea!

Are you switching to another district?

If you finish the school year, you will get paid because the dist. will be fulfilling the terms of last year's contract. In my experience, school dists. don't pay a lump sum, but that will depend on your district. Health insurance will end because you will no longer be an employee of the district.

You will get paid for the year because you've worked your contracted days. Basically your summer pay is just part of your salary that the district holds for you so that you can have equal checks throughout the year. Whether or not the district will pay you one lump sum or not - I don't know. You will also want to check on medical coverage. The districts I've worked for would cover the medical for the entire year (through the summer) as well since you finished your contract however, and it deters people from resigning at the last minute just to keep coverage. All districts probably don't do this.

after my 1st yr teaching my dh was transfered out of state. My district paid over 12 months and I received a check every month over the summer. I think it ended the beginning of Aug, when returning employees would have reported to work.

The contract is with your school district, not with your school. You are free to move to other schools within your same school district. You'd still be on the same contract. However, if you plan on moving to a school in a different school district, then you would have to sign a new contract with that other district.

If you are leaving your district before the school year ends, they will probably pay you a lump sum for the hold back money that was put aside for spring and summer break. If you work through the last day of the school year, you would still receive your summer pay, as usual. You should also receive your health benefits through the end of your contracted year, which is usually the week before the next school year starts. That's when your new contract would kick in, as would your new benefits. That's how it works out here, anyway.

Yes, your salary is divided into 12 months...or 24 pays. We are paid in the summer for work we have already done.

Here there are no unions to talk to.

If we work until the end of our contract (end of May), we get paid all summer, and get insurance all summer. I've worked in 3 different school districts, and this is the case all over the state. Last year, dh moved for work in Jan, and I was going to stay and try to sell the house and finish out my contract. Amazingly, we sold the house before we could list it, and I was released from my contract at the end of March. I received a lump sum at the end of April, and my ins. ended at that time.

When you contract for the school year and uphold your end of the contract, I don't see how your district can legally withhold money or benefits (ins.) from you.

My first teaching job, I did not renew at the end of the year (because I was getting married and moving across the country). I still continued to get paid through the summer.

When I first left teaching AND when I've held noncontinuing contracts, the insurance has continued through the summer just as the pay did. Unless you broke your old contract before the school year ended, it is fulfilled - with pay and benefits being divided out into 12 month.

I'd definitely check with your union on this one. Around here, pay continues if you've opted for a 12 month pay. Benefits, however, stop. Terms of the contract are considered fulfilled when the school year ends. Check your contract.

I'm amazed at all the regional differences showing up here.

sorry I can't answer your question. I just wanted to post to say that I'm surprised that so many people have the 12 month option. Is it an option or do you have to take 12 months pay? My district does a 10 month pay calendar, meaning that I don't get a check after the last one in June, until September 15th.

I've never been offered a choice. We automatically get 12 month pay.

I work at a private school. We don't have a union and we have no option other than the 12 month pay plan. You'll be paid your full contract salary.
