I have a giftcard for Walmart & i can't seem to find anything except memory card which I go thru alot. So I thought I'd get 10 2g cards...but do they expire like film used to? Should I buy so many at once or it doesn't matter? Thanks all.

No, they don't expire like film. Like any electronic device, they do age, and degrade over time, but the process is completely different, and is more a matter of how well they're stored rather than just simply the passage of time. Also, the time periods involved are very different. Film generally lasts years, while SD cards could last a decade or two, if stored well.

the unfortunate thing (for using up your gift card) is that you can easily beat walmart prices for SD cards and other digital memory.

Use www.pricegrabber.com

I have beat their prices by at least half. and that was from reputable online retailers like newegg, buy.com. Not the ripoff places that advertise a great price and then want you to buy more stuff or the item is backordered etc...

If your Walmart is a Super-Walmart they have a grocery store section. You can use up your gift card there. Also, you do not need to use up the whole card at once. They just give you the card back with a leftover balance to be used the next few/several times you shop. :)

SD cards don't expire, but if you save your photos to your computer or cd you won't need that many... I usually have 2 on hand - one for the camera and one for a back up. The other thing you need to consider is if you get a different camera, they may not use SD media.

I know you didn't ask, but we will help you use up your gift card!
How about an oil change/tire purchase/rotation or DVD's?

Another consideration, I had a card once, for a store I didn't use, I sold it on ebay for close to face value.

This is the first thing I thought of. I bought extra cards for my first camera, and when I replaced the camera none of the new cameras used that type of card. SD cards are used in everything now, but that tends to change rather quickly in technology. Good luck making your choice!

I 2nd this . . . DS9 has a new Nintendo Gameboy DSI; it takes an SD card for the stuff you can download from Nintendo, but it need an DS card that's at least 2g.
