Do schools have an obligation to keep students safe?

For the love of God, of course they are responsible. Will the world just keep their disgusting adult paws off of kids.

Empty the jails of potheads and fill them up with these freaks to rot, where are the initiatives or referendums on this cause I'm all in

@QueenIsabella a couple of thoughgts; I hope your oldest has not only been trained, but required to report suspicion without obstacles being put in place.. Many youth agencies/districts/groups give lip service to it by training then putting requirements like reporting to your supervisor first or completing paperwork first.

Also keep in mind the choice to go to court does not solely lay with the District, the insurance carriers involved often have as much, if not more, say in since the school is not the only one paying out in settlements. One of our local districts fought back over claims they didn't stop an abusive coach, partially pushed by the insurance companies. They ended up winning in court as jury agreed they had done all they could reasonably have done at the time.

I appreciate your concern about my daughter, but you can rest easy--she's not one to let things be swept under the rug. Knowing her, I'd be more concerned about her blowing a case by going all honey badger on the "perp". Growing up, she was the smallest person in her grade, and the bus bully was afraid of her--she made him cry. She felt bad about it afterwards, but he made the mistake of picking on her friend.

I could see insurance carriers not wanting to settle, and also I believe some individuals are being sued, who may not have enough insurance to cover a large settlement. I still think a court case is a PR nightmare.

Of course schools have to keep our kids safe! How did this guy get away with this for so long? Reminds me of the Larry Nasser case where it got swept under the rug.

At a public school, yes, the school has an obligation. At a private religious school, no, at least not in Florida. Or so my parents and I were told by both the police and a high-priced attorney when we showed them my bruises from being beaten and locked in a closet all day by the headmaster.

Short answer: Yes, schools have an obligation to keep students safe from people like that.
