Do Points Required Ever Go Up?

Sorry if this has been answered here before but I've been lurking for awhile and haven't seen it asked:
At the top of the page where the Timeshare store has its listings, there is a DVC points charts. What I don't understand is why there's one for 2003 and one for 2004. Wouldn't the amount of points needed stay the same from year to year, otherwise what's the advantage of buying DVC?

I know the maintenance fees go up but I'm confused on the points. Thanks,
zuzu

Hi, zuzu. No, TOTAL points will never increase, however it is possible (not likely) that points can be redistributed amongst seasons, days, and possibly room sizes. It is important to remember that if the points required for one category increase, there must be a decrease of the same amount in another category or categories.
I believe point reallocation has only happened once or twice since the start of DVC.

Have fun, and WELCOME to the boards!

The reason for different point charts for the different years is because there are subtle differences between years. The Disney seasons vary around the national holidays, mainly Easter and Thanksgiving. (Christmas is always the 25th).

Easter may be in April one year but in May in another year. If you compare charts, you'll see the only difference is in these holiday dates.

Example: November is all in Choice season except the Wed-Thurs-Fri for Thanksgiving . These three days are in Magic season. In 2003 these dates are Nov 26-28 but in 2004 they are Nov 24 - 26.

I will agree overall with the explanations you've gotten however I believe that minor reallocations over the years are inevitable. So if you decide to buy you may want to buy a cushion of points depending on what unit size and season you're looking at. Buying exactly the number of points you think you need based on the points tables can be risky.

Points required for the non-DVC options can (and do) go up.

I

Please correct if I am wrong (it would not be by any means a first), but I believe that the annual points for a particular unit cannot go up. Accordingly, if, hypothetically, it cost 2500 points to stay in a studio for a year, that 2500 points can be redistributed amongst the 365 days in whatever fashion DVC deems appropriate, but the aggregate points for that unit cannot go up (so they cannot, for example, make shift points from a studio to a one bedroom or from one studio to another - if one had a better view). Hence, the aggregate points for ALL units cannot go up as well.

Please let me know if you believe I am correct. My brain hurts! ;)

At the last Old Key West annual meeting, the question of reallocation of points to reduce the penalty of staying on the weekends was brought up. The DVC board mentioned how upset the membership was when they adjusted the allocation of points at OKW a few years back. The message that I got from their comments leads me to believe that they are unlikely to do any more point reallocations in the future without careful consideration. Dean's advice is well taken for those who have carefully calculated the exact number of points that they need for their annual vacations. I, for one, am not that good of a planner.

While true, remember that a unit does not mean a single room. At OKW and HH it's a whole building. At the others it's a pretty good size chunk of a floor or similar grouping. So they could increase one size while decreasing another if they chose to. From a practicle standpoint it's easier to just adjust weekend ot weekday and/or season to season so that's what I'd expect when they do adjust.
