Do points needed increase each year?

I've been toying with the idea of buying into the DVC and have been lurking around this board for awhile. Even though I've read through the FAQ and the posts, I can't find the answer to this question:

Do the number of points needed to book certain DVC resorts during certain periods of time increase from year to year? ex: right now I can get a weekly stay at an OKW studio room during Adventure season for 80 points. Will it still be 80 points 10 years from now, 20 years, etc?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question. I'm just kind of confused about the whole point thing right now!

Points required for a particular stay at a particular resort in a particular room for a particular time of year never change. The days of the year might change slightly that are included in the different season names, but the total points allocated to a room for a year never changes.

That's not quite accurate. The point requirements can change. There was a reallocaiton of point requirements at OKW a few years ago.

When the point requirement goes up in one season it must be reduced in another season.

IIRC, the points required to reserve a particular unit for an entire year cannot change over the life of the membership. In this case, a unit is a group of rooms that was defined by the developer when the resort was in the selling process.

Practically, what it means is that point requirements can be reallocated between seasons, days of the week, etc., but the total number of points cannot be increased. If something gets increased, then something else will get decreased.

Points have been reallocated only twice since the beginning of DVC - once at OKW (not sure why) and once for BWV (to create the standard view). THe BWV situation happened before the resort was sold out and a similar situation is very unlikely to reoccur. Doubtful that DVC will ever have a "two view" DVC again. It's just too much hassle to manage.

IMHO, point reallocation really isn't anything to worry about and isn't likely to occur very frequently (if ever again).

What about a point realloctation to alleviate some of the "busy"dec seaon that seems to be happening ??? Is this a real possibility. Will dvc change seasons to make that time of year their "High" time of the year?

I hope not! I really like going then and appreciate the lower points. :) :)

Seriously, I think we should keep in mind that there are a lot of BWV rooms that are "out of service" due to rehab work this year. That undoubtedly puts pressure on the other resorts at the 7 month mark as well as on the BWV owners who book ahead of that. I'd hate to see any reallocations occur based on this year's data. FWIW, there are other times of the year that also seem to book quickly.

Also, all of the "data" that we have is really only anecdotal - and based on those who post on this board. (I suspect we are NOT typical)! DVC has the only trustworthy data regarding occupancy & demand. If they decide to change anything, you can be sure they will have carefully thought it out. Any change of this nature would be very difficult and sure to generate multiple complaints from those negatively impacted.

JMHO.

I've been predicting some sort of reallocation for a couple of years now, so far I've been wrong but if I keep repeating it eventually it'll become true. To put things in perspective from the previous reallocation, a studio at OKW went up from 69 to 80 points during Adventure season and other seasons went down a point here and there. Other size units went up a corresponding amount. It wasn't a big deal except to those that had calculated an exact number of points for that time of year. I know it costs some people almost an entire week of vacations. Also remember that OKW was the only DVC resort at that time. This is the reason why I recommend not buying an exact number of points for a certain stay unless your already on the more expensive end of Magic, Premier seasons for a 2 BR or larger.

Points for using the non-DVC options can, and do, go up. The WDW resorts held pretty steady for quite a few years. Last year, they created new categories with some major increases in points needed for some times of the year. Hopefully, they will now stay fairly steady again for a few years.
