Do point costs for rooms go up each year?

I am wondering how many points to purchase, and if I will need to purchase more in 10 years. If a room costs 25 points for a weekday now(50 on weekends...for arguments sake only....) in 10 years time, might the costs be 35 and 70?

Thanks
Prospective buyer.

If you look at a points chart for any given resort and add the points up, that point total will be the same year after year for the entire length of the contract (2057 AKV, 2054 SSR or 2042 all other resorts). However, Disney reserves the right to change the allocations year to year for a given resort. For example, if they want to raise the points at OKW to rent a villa or raise points during a peak time (such as spring break), they can, however, they have to lower them somewhere else at OKW.

Bottom line, they can play around with the points, but they can't raise them. The only thing that can raise is the maintenance fees that are charged on an annual basis. Like your property taxes, our guide suggested we budget approximately 3 - 5% every year just to be safe.

Best of luck in your decision making process. These boards are great and you'll gain a lot of insight by just reading the posts. :thumbsup2

As Buckeye stated, they can't raise the total number of points, but they can reallocate the distribution.

That said, they have only done this one time, in 1996 for the OKW resort. Over the years DVC has pretty much learned the correct point structure for each resort, and it is doubtful there'll be any other reallocations in the future.

Since you got 2 great answers I will just

Welcome you to the DIS.

Just so you're clear, the answers above are only for the DVC resorts. The daily point rate for the non DVC resorts, cruise line, etc do tend to go up every year.

Is there a chart with point values for NON DVC resorts somewhere? Can you stay at a Moderate using points?

Second question first, yes you can stay at a moderate. You can't use them at a value or a Disney resort that has a DVC resort attached to it, such as you can't use points at Boardwalk Inn or Wilderness Lodge.

As to points charts, I haven't seen one. But to give you an idea, for a moderate the points needed range from 16 for a standard view during value season Sun->Thru to 45 points for a water/pool view during holiday season on a Fri/Sat. At the other end, Grand Floridian a Garden during value Sun->Thru is 40 points while Royal Palm club during holiday on a Fri/Sat is 178 points.

It's not a great value to use DVC points for a moderate. The DVC resorts are Deluxe resorts and will actually 'cost' you less points than spending a night at a Moderate!

So, it's a waste to sign up for DVC if you plan on using them to stay at Poly during holidays. I am addicted to monorail access as well as Poly!

Though I did just buy in at VWL.

Buying into DVC does not preclude you from staying at a place like the Poly on points during the holidays, it's just that you would need A LOT more points than you would at a DVC resort.

that being said, if you love the monorail, there may be a DVC resort coming that you might like...

Thank you very much. It's 21 degrees here and everything is ice. I know how you feel with the cold. Luckily our winter has only just begun on Long Island and it shouldn't last long.
