You aren't going to see the difference so there isn't much point to me answering.

A girl wearing a micro mini may or may not have on appropriate undergarments to a make sure everything stays covered no matter how she sits or stands or gets up or bends over.

Well then with that logic any girl who wanted to wear a micro mini with the appropriate undergarment on should be able to then, not just the cheerleaders.

I jokingly say I had a prenatal agreement that DD would not be a cheerleader. Deep down, I was serious. I did not put her in gymnastics or dance because around here, if you do those things, they'll seek you out to cheer.
There's no cheerleader envy about it (why would there be? ) I would rather see my kid play soccer, basketball, football, rugby, tennis, golf...you name it. I'm sure the gods will bless me with some cute little grandkid who wants to cheer.

When I had my daughter I also hoped she would not want to cheer- dance was fine just really did not want her to be a cheerleader, I would rather she played a real sport rather than just did an activity like being the kid standing on the sideline saying "yeah team".

We are such a nation of such PRUDES!! Something like this would never even be a topic of conversation in a European country where, by and large, they are much more at ease with their bodies. You can see her thighs when she wears that skirt? Oh the horrors. (ummm there's shorts under there you know - no one is going to see her unmentionables). Clothes are tight, form-fitting? EEK! Look, cheerleaders, dancers, gymnasts, swimmers, sportspeople in general - work hard to maintain their physique, if they look good in it, and it is part of their uniform for a school-sanctioned event, stop worrying about it!

To me this is all a part of the culture that says if a woman looks good in something, and she gets attacked, the she shares the blame because she had the audacity to dress that way. NO. This is much the same - schools claim short skirts and revealing clothes are a distraction. Well, maybe the blame should not be placed on the female, who is minding her own business wearing the clothes she likes, but on the male, who can't keep his hormones in check long enough to finish his algebra! But no, he always gets a pass - boy will be boys you know! *sarcasm font*

My DD13 is an athlete. She does it all - basketball, dance, runs for fun, this year she is playing on the boys' football team! She found out that they couldn't, by law, stop her, so she showed up at practice and got right in there. She has, for her age, fantastic musculature and form. And you know what? She can wear whatever she wants. Its your body, you work hard to maintain it, you want to show it off a little, be my guest. But, keep your head held high, learn to be strong and protect yourself, learn to be smart and make good decisions. As long as she keeps her underwear and all of the pertinent parts covered, go for it.

Our culture of somehow "shaming" strong, powerful, independent females just dismays me.

I will hop off my feminist soapbox now, and go back to lurking. We can agree to disagree.

Gosh, I miss the 70s, when people were more sane about this stuff.

Yes, our cheerleaders wore their uniforms on game days. Yes, the football players wore their jerseys on game day. Yes, it increased school spirit, which was the whole idea.

School dress codes weren't ridiculous in the 70s. At our schools, all shorts have to be to the knee. It is very hard to find shorts to the knee, so most kids wear jeans or capris in the Florida heat. It is ridiculous.

I think the dress code should apply to all kids, not just cheerleaders. I would never lodge the complaint, but I hate the double standard. You can bet my DD would not be allowed to wear her colorguard uniform on game days.

The cheer uniform is a uniform for the sport that the girls take part in.

If you want to argue that the uniform isn't within in the school dress code, fine. But you can't then say its ok to wear other things that are out of the code. Like, jeans and t-shirts when everyone else has to wear khakis and polos. Or football jerseys when everyone else has to wear a polo. Or even a cheer top and pants when everyone else is in school uniforms.

If you want to argue that the uniform isn't appropriate for school at all because its too short or its "vulgar" as stated in the article or anything about the length of the skirt or the sleeveless top then the uniform should not be considered appropriate for cheering at the games.

IMHO, you can't have it both ways.

When I was on the squad, we had to show up early to school to get the gym ready for the pep rally. Then, we would go to first period for about 30 minutes. Then, we went to the locker room to change into our uniforms for the pep rally. We did the rally, everyone had a good time, the students go back to class, and the cheerleaders stay to clean up the gym. Then, it was back to the locker room to change into our street clothes. Then we headed back to class. What's the point of that? Is it really that big of a deal for a cheerleader to just wear the stinkin' uniform? No one is saying that the cheerleaders are above the dress code. Come Monday, if that same cheerleader is in booty shorts and a halter top, she will be in trouble. If she doesn't wear her uniform (for whatever reason) on game day and wears a short skirt, she will get in trouble. But, for people to raise a fuss about her wearing a school issued cheerleading uniform on a day where she is already wearing it in school for the pep rally as well as after school at the football game is just ridiculous and people wanting to find something to complain about.

Ot slightly. All the rules that are based on "studies" to get better grades etc. are not making the schools better.

While I am in the camp of different clothes are appropriate for different activities, I also believe that boys are not going to stop fantasising about pretty young girls regardless if what you dress them in. To make the girls dress in accordance to their effect on boys is wrong.

Totally, well not so totally off topic: I picked my son up from HS one day last year, asked him how his day was, as usual, and he just started shaking his head. I asked him what happened, he laughed and said the girls are all ticked off because they can't wear anything with writing on their butts. He say, they wear this stuff with writing on the behind and then they have the nerve to get mad when we try and read it. He thinks girls are quite amusing, sometimes in a not so good way. lol

No, I do get it. The point I've been trying to make is if it is "inappropriate" for a girl to wear a micro-mini to class, then (at least IMO), the design & color of the micro-mini doesn't change the appropriateness.

At least mhsjax finally admitted it was a double standard. Personally, I don't like double standards and think they should be avoided whenever possible.

I also understand the reason for the short skirts is for the range in motion the girls need while they're doing their stunts. That makes total sense. However, IMO, since they're not doing stunts during school time, that range of motion isn't needed.

And again, contrary to what some have claimed, it's not cheerleader "hate" to say they should be held to the same standards as other students.

I have never seen a cheerleader "flashing" anything. DD had to wear the exact same undergarments for show choir last year. NOTHING shows under that skirt--how else could they do the flips and jumps?

I wouldn't have an issue with dd wearing a micro mini with that same covering underneath.

As for your last statement---- really? You think cheerleaders think that? You must not know any. There are 20 girls on our hs squad. The range from tiny (looking like under jr. high size) to an athletic build to overweight. Not one of them is into "showing off their body".

Or you rewrite the code to allow certain things. Our area MS all have the same dress code... khaki's (or tan skirts), belts, & polos OR a school T-shirt, sweatshirt, jersey. If schools want to say "school team uniforms are appropriate", fine. Personally, I disagree (the aforementioned wrestling, swimming, and gymnastics uniforms I don't think are appropriate).

I actually said the same thing earlier... if you (general) think the skirts are "vulgar", then they are vulgar no matter where they are being used. An argument can be made IMO whether the skirts are "appropriate" though. The skirts are appropriate when the girls are doing their stunts, competitions, or just cheering in general. I don't think they are appropriate in the classroom, just like any micro-mini skirt would be inappropriate.

I really don't care but I'm going to assume the issue isn't with violating strict school uniform rules, it is violating dress code. Those are different. I don't know of any public schools around me that make you wear a polo or shirt and tie or anything like that. They have codes much closer to forbidding a couple of things instead of mandating a couple.

If, for example, the school has a dress code that forbids skirts that aren't a certain length but doesn't forbid football jerseys then a cheerleader uniform might violate the code while a football jersey doesn't. In that case it makes total sense to allow the jersey to be worn but not the cheerleader uniform. And no, cheerleaders should not get a pass on the dress code just because the violating garment is a school uniform. Double standards should not be allowed when it comes to dress code. The same rules applied at my school to everyone. If you played football you could wear your jersey, if you didn't you could still wear a jersey. Browns, Buckeyes, Dolphins, it didn't matter. Same for baseball and soccer. All jerseys were allowed. And the jerseys that weren't allowed, like wrestling and swimming, weren't allowed for everyone. You couldn't just wear your bathing suit whether it was the one for the school or not.

I posted earlier what my high school dress code was. Our cheerleader uniforms didn't violate it so they were allowed to wear them. The basketball players though had to wear t-shirts under their uniform tops because not doing so would violate the dress code and it was enforced the exact same for them as it would be if I came in wearing a Mark Price jersey. No double standard.

Your last paragraph also doesn't make sense. In school dress codes don't have to apply to after school activities as well. They are two completely different things. When I was on the company softball team I didn't wear my jersey to work because I was smart enough to know that the company buying them didn't mean I can claim that makes them an exception to our shirt and tie dress code. Only an idiot would have thought that.

But, all that being said, high school dress codes are not something to get heated up over. Not in high school and definitely not when you are old enough to have high school aged children yourself.

Did I answer your question? I will state my answer again. Cheerleaders should 100% be allowed to wear the uniform on game day, all other skirts not allowed.

Today is game day at dd's high school. First game and its a home game. Right now they are listening to music and dancing around waiting for the pep rally to start.

One of our choir member is out of uniform (shocking, i know) as he is singing the national anthem. So he is in dress pants, shirt and tie.

Some of the kids (dd included) are wearing football t-shirts and jeans. They earned the right to do this according to their teachers.

Others are wearing polo shirts and khakis. and most of those have a school hoodie on to get out of wearing the polo.

The seniors have their own style today as is traditional for the first game. So some have painted faces, some have school colors in their hair, however they want to show their school pride.

The football players have on their jerseys and the cheerleaders have on their uniforms.

Wow. Our school is just full of rule breakers today. Not a kid in sight in school dress code.

Thank goodness the kids seem to "get it" and won't be complaining.

We will have to disagree. Oh and FWIW, My DD's high school doesn't allow their cheerleaders to wear uniforms either, I think it is stupid and a tradition that should remain. Cheerleader should be allowed to wear the uniforms on game day. That is my opinion and it won't change, as I am sure the schools policy won't either.

Oh and My DD isn NOT a cheerleader at school so I am not speaking as a mom of a school cheerleader.

FWIW, I have seen kids in clothes that are way more offensive and just as against dress code as the cheer uniforms when I pick my kids up f rom school, yet these kids get a pass. I still think it is brought on by bitter people who have nothing better to do with their time.

I saw the uniforms on the Today show that they were referring to and they weren't the worst ones I've ever seen, actually quite modest. No middrifts and a straight type skirt, I dont think its a big deal more that it was always a tradition for the football players to wear their jerseys and cheerleaders wear their uniforms. Never bothered me and never saw it as a distraction in school.

I think administrators can take things too far though, in middle school I fought with a PITA secretary on more than one occasion about dress code. One time she called me and demanded I bring up shoes and socks for my DD and that she was wearing flip flops. I argued they were $30 sketcher sandals and I would not be coming up there, and if she wanted to show the shoes to the principal and she had a problem with them then they could call me themselves. Never got another call about the shoes.

Another occasion I got a call to bring up a T-shirt, same DD was wearing a shirt with a smiley that had fangs and it said "bite me" underneath (back when Twilight was huge). I didnt see how that was offensive, her grandmother actually bought the shirt and I didnt see the problem and tried to explain what it was. The secretary took it as a F-off slogan and made DD change into her gym shirt since I refused to come up that day too. I told the secretary she really needed to find something to do with her time.

Dress code is dress code and my kids do abide by it but when I can walk through the school and see girls with skirts to the bottom of their butts and shear shirts please dont complain about something ridiculous. They stopped calling me for stupid stuff.
