Do or did

Yes, without really realizing it until I was called out for posting under both names in a thread i started.

It's not so much the actual username that tips people off. It's the manner in which the posts are worded, usually. Also, opinions don't usually change when someone changes usernames, and the opinions and they way they are set forth in posts often remain the same.

I know someone here on DIS that's had at least 4 usernames (plus access to a fifth name), but I know who they are.

I just don't pay enough attention to the usernames to connect the opinions to a name in the first place. Odds are I wouldn't notice they were using a different name, because I probably wouldn't know the name they were previously using.

FWIW, I quit paying attention to usernames a long time ago. I prefer to not associate an opinion, with a person. I've seen too many people get upset with someone, then seemingly hold a grudge against them forever. They take cheap shots at them every chance they get or argue with everything they post. Unfortunately, I do know some of those usernames, because those posters have a way of catching your attention. I prefer to not take anonymous message boards that personally.

Just the one...I lurked for many years when I was planning trips, I can't remember now why I finally set up an account.

No, just the one, and I have used it in more than one place. Someone here recognized me from another forum just by the name. It feels as much my name as my legal name does.

A long long time ago in a galaxy far away.............

I had a different name. It was a freer time, a more liberal time, a more free for all.

Then came the wars, the bloody, bloody wars. I got to a point where due to where I worked I could not access these boards anymore except at home and faded away.

Then I was able to come back and took on a slightly kinder gentler persona (that is really no different than I have always been) and came with a new handle.

So here I am and I talk about issues in a much calmer voice and for my own good many topics have been declared off limits so I can control myself much better now.

I like this world much better.

Conversely, I find myself agreeing or disagreeing with the opinion, not the poster. While I do find myself agreeing with the same people repeatedly, I don't hold grudges, and I absolutely don't seek out anyone to take cheap shots at.

Wow, I never pay enough attention. That's amazing.

I haven't had other usernames but there are threads I said something dumb and wish I had:)

Most people don't, but a few absolutely do. That's why I said only a few user names have jumped out at me. I also only care about the opinion not the poster. I reply to a post, then move on. Ignoring the username makes that easier for me, but that's just me. If people want to pay attention to usernames, more power to them.

 I think we've all been there. Sticking to one username helps with not over sharing, but everybody makes a bad decision on occasion.

I've only ever been me! I also don't pay attention to know who anyone is from their prior posting life. Back in the political posting days, I used to pay a little more attention.

I made another one once to start a thread asking for advise. I don’t remember now what the name was. Heck if I ever get logged out of this one, I have no clue how to log back in so having more than one would be impossible for me.

There's one member that I will never forget from those days. As far as I know, she's no longer here, but she was really over the top in pushing her political agenda.

I remember a poster who would come here all the the time to talk about her romantic crushes. She would always ask for advice, everyone would give her thoughtful, helpful feedback, she would come up with all kinds of reasons why she couldn't take the advice, and the pattern would start all over again. Eventually, people started commenting on the endless cycle, and she stopped posting. But then she came back with a different name and the exact same dating issues and everyone immediately recognized her, but she denied everything. But she had posted identical info about holiday decorations or something similar under both names. I can't remember either name though.

I’ve always been WorldWacky.

About a month ago I started reading all of the old threads starting with the last page on here. (I was bored.) I’m up to September 16, 2002. Lots of diffferent names, but I could swear, I know some of those people just by how they post.

The boards had a very different feel. Lots of varying opinions being shared and no where near the animosity or outright anger that is displayed these days. It’s nice to see rather calm debates on polarizing subjects instead of outright war being declared for someone disagreeing with someone’s opinion. Now...that being said, I don’t know if any super crazy threads have been removed. Could be. But there are plenty of political and religious threads that didn’t cause the world to end. (It’s also funny (and a little sad) to see people complain about the high price of gas...$1.45/gallon! If they only knew...:rolleyes2

As you can see, I've been posting here a long time. In the old days, there was a tendency for people to form cliques & be really nasty to people that weren't in their group. I left cliques behind in high school, so I didn't participate in those threads. Unfortunately, the cliques would follow people they didn't like to other threads & harass them, which is why I noticed them. I found it pathetic that adults could be so immature.

The worst threads tended to be the political ones. They could get downright nasty & at times included threats.

After experiencing the early days of the DIS, I can understand why this board is so heavily moderated. It's too bad that adults need people to monitor them, because they can't behave in a mature manner.

@WorldWacky that's a great illustration of how behavior has changed on social media since 2002. Your choice of user names was prescient...what a wacky world!
There was a time when you could disagree with someone about a controversial topic without hating every fiber of their being. Wish we could get back to that.
@tarheelmjfan your point is well-taken: Take a look around at sites that aren't moderated, they consist of name calling and ad hom attacks that are basically useless for any kind of thoughtful/helpful conversation. The mods here do a good job considering the amount of traffic they deal with, it's a thankless job and these folks volunteer to do this.:thumbsup2

Only ever had the one name. I remember Pop Daddy though, and his catch phrase--"Long post." ;)

Yes, without really realizing it until I was called out for posting under both names in a thread i started.

How do you not realise that you made a second user id? I can see not noticing which one you've signed in under, but how do you create a new user name without doing it purposefully?

A second User name seems to have occurred in two instances, one it was done to ask a question without all of the preconceived notions of a poster coming into play. In other words they felt they could not get a reasonable or good opinion under their original name because of a reputation. The second was when someone just went off the deep end and to be able to post anything again had to come at it with a totally different name. As someone else pointed out it is interesting that even with name changes the writing style and opinions still shine through. I will admit I pay much less attention to names today as opposed to many years ago. Back then I could tell you who the poster was without even seeing the name just from what they said. It got to a point where I could almost write the post for them because they were so predictable and so consistant.

I came here in the late 90's specifically to plan trips, then I got involved with all the postings and contributed and commented. Then I left for a lot of reasons and finally came back because we were going a lot and I wanted to see what advice/ information was available. I try to stay more middle of the road because dispite a kinder gentler feel there are still those out there who will rip you up in a heartbeat if you don't walk the line. But that really is the way of a lot of boards these days, some are brutal but many are like this one, play nice and things go okay as long as you don't rock the boat too much.
