...where there's snow seasonally?

I was about to use an oak tree in a pattern of mine but just realized maybe it wouldn't work if oak trees typically don't grow where there's snow.
 
Not what you have in Texas as Live Oaks. Our Oak trees lose their leaves in the winter so all you could show is the tree trunks and branches without leaves.
 
Do they turn pretty colors in the fall, or are they kinda "blah"? And do they have the neat sweaping branches like the Live Oaks down here?
 
They turn a beautiful burnt gold color, not as bright and colorful as the maples, but spectacular nevertheless.

I have never seen your version, so I cannot compare.
 

They tend to grow a bit more vertical than horizontal. They spread out some then up. The one out my window has leaves that are about 10 in. But I'm not sure that is normal.
