for DJ's or bands

Did you have one?

If so, what was on it?

We had a do not play list. Our DJ suggested we fill out his website with Must Play, Like to Play and Do Not Play. Here is the list we had for the do not play:

Beatles - Twist And Shout
Diamond, Neil - Sweet Caroline (Good Times Never Seemed So Good)
Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup
Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Idol, Billy - Mony Mony
Idol, Billy - White Wedding
McLean, Don - American Pie
Morrison, Van - Brown Eyed Girl
Outkast - Hey Ya!
Sorta Crackers Band - Chicken Dance
Travolta, John & Olivia Newton-John -Grease Megamix
Travolta, John & Olivia Newton-John - You're The One That I Want
Tutone, Tommy - 867-5309/Jenny
Village People - Y.M.C.A.

We're not the line dance type of people at all and we didn't want songs that were typically played at our proms and other school dances. HTH! :)

Ha ha, those would all make my "Must Play" list! It takes all kinds!

I must say that Sweet Caroline is at the top of my must play list, but that's just a Boston thing :)

Must Not Play (aside from the obvious country, rap and polka ;))

- I'll Stand By You - The Pretenders
- Anything by Shania Twain, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, (still working on the list)

We had a Do Not Play list. We had a good number of children at our event. We told our DJ not to play anything that they would not play on Radio Disney. The must play list was the first dance, father/daughter, etc.

We're still working on our list but right now our DNP list includes:

Anything by Shania Twain, Whitney Houston, Maria Carey or Celine Dion
No rap or hip hop unless it's a specific song we've given the O.K. for

Everyone's tastes are different but that's what we've got

AHH! Thank you Rachel! Adding Celine Dion to our D.N.P. list!!

I thought a do not play list was a complete waste of time. If you have a good DJ they will do their job well and feel out the couple. All I asked for was no rap and to play appropriate music based on what the guests were doing, ie. if people seemed interested in dancing play dance music, if everyone is having quiet conversation then just nice background music. In the end it worked out perfectly and I had no issues. Unless the song will absolutely ruin the day (perhaps a song from an old flame) I wouldn't bother with being so specific. I would focus more on what you do want and what is important.

Personally we had a couple songs/ artists that I needed to specify to our DJ that was not to be played no matter who asked. No matter how well a DJ does their job there was no way he could know about my DH's absolute hatred of Celine Dion. I think that going through the trouble of figuring out a ton of songs rather than genres can be a bit much.

We didn't have a do not play list so I am puzzled by this. What if one of your guests requests a song and it is on a do not play list- does the dj or band actually tell the guest they can't play it because the bridal couple said they couldn't???? That could be awkward. Has anybody had that happen?

I just meant that some couples have HUGE do not play lists and I think it is over kill. If there is something you absolutely abhor then of course inform the DJ. Making a list of every song you can think of that you don't like is extreme, I've heard of some brides with over 100 do not play songs. I am sure there is a happy medium.

We had two major "do not play" criteria. No "line dances" (chicken dance, electric slide, etc) and no "gay anthems" (I Will Survive, It's Raining Men, etc).

I was surprised by how big a deal it became on my planning journal. Some people feel very strongly about the Chicken Dance! :rotfl2: One poster works as a DJ in Wisconsin and was very vocal about "don't restrict my ability to get people on the floor" but in the end the DJ we had with Disney had NO problem working around our restrictions and keeping people on the dance floor. He was fun, energetic, and created the perfect atmosphere for us. He didn't need the Chicken Dance to do that.

We also thought that the "gay anthems" at a gay wedding was just going to be "too much" and we were trying to not go too "over the top".

In the end we gave the DJ those two restrictions and instructions that we wanted a "Sixties, Seventies, Eighties dance party vibe" and he delivered in spades.

60's, 70's and 80's sounds great to me.

It sounds silly but I really wanted to avoid anything like "I Like Big Butts" or something, lol. I am sure Disney will assign me a great dj, though.

DNP lists are usually never a problem. Typically what one bride does not want, another might. Believe me, if I do not hear "The Chicken Dance" this weekend, it will not crush me... I'll probably hear it next weekend, anyway :)

A bigger problem is when a Bride will give the DJ a list of songs to play, and that list is over 100 (or 200) songs! Remember, after introductions, dinner, special dances, etc, you have about 2 to 2.5 hours of "dance time" which equals about 40 songs total. (Figure about 17 songs per hour).

Hope this helps!

We're having a lunch reception, so no DJ. We have an I-Pod so we can pick our own play list!!!!!

Our DO NOT PLAY was Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus!

We had made a CD of the must plays (our dance, father daughter, mother son, bridal party, end of the night).

We gave in to Chicken Dance as one of our good friends loves chickens so we played it especially for her.

I had it happen. It was no big deal. I had a song I did not want played and my cousin requested it. The DJ simply said, the bride doesn't want that song played. My cousin said ok no problem. Not awkward. It's our wedding. It would be awkward for me to have heard that song though, which is why it was on the DNP list.
