Do not order Surf & Turf at Narcoosse's

My DH & I just got back from the world. The one meal I was really looking forward to was dinner at Narcoosse's.

It started off great with the seafood bisque. Then we both ordered the surf & turf. (why not, we are on the DxDP and it is included). The filet mignon was amazing. However, the lobster tail tasted like I was eating air. I am not kidding, it had no taste at all.

We told the waitress about this and she said it is the only thing on the menu that is prepared from frozen product. I wish I had known this before I ordered. I would not have gotten it. This restaurant is known for it's seafood. There were many fish dishes that sounded really good.

I left there feeling completely unsatisfied.

Thought I would pass this info on so no one else makes this mistake.

You can bet at 90+% of the time that you get just the lobster tail, it's previously frozen. I've had many lobster tails that I prepared from frozen and they were just fine. The surf and turf is what I'll be having when I'm there in May.

Are you sure you even like lobster to begin with? ;) It's one of those things where a number of people don't really like it in comparison to crab legs.

I love lobster! I grew up in NY and lived in New England for 7 years, so I know what lobster tastes like. And I am telling you this had ZERO taste. I kept pouring on the butter thinking it would help and it didn't.

So good luck with your visit in May. This is just my $.02.

We went last March and 4 of us orderd the lobster. It was very chewy and tough. None of us wanted to complain because we were having such fun. We ate at Captain Jack's later in the week and the lobster tails were wonderful. 5 out of the 6 in our party got them and we loved it. I hear now they are no longer on the menu. I don't think we will go back to Narcosses's again because we just did not see the value if we used 2 DDP credits and I don't think we see a value if we paid OOP. We are glad that we went once because if we didn't we probably would always think we were missing something.

I agree that the filet is great, but the lobster was kind of disapointing. I heard the whole lobster is a different kind, and is much better.

It's probably Rock Lobster. I don't think there is much taste to it no matter how much butter sauce you dip it in.

Many people have commented that the full lobster entree is a 1 1/2-lb Maine lobster whereas the surf from the surf and turf is a rock lobster or some lesser quality tail. I have every reason to believe this. You can also be sure that most products you are being served, particularly the seafood, have been frozen (with the exception of the farm-raised product they get from Epcot). Are you under the impression the Maine lobsters are kept alive in a tank while flown from their waters of origin? They are frozen too.

You can substitute the lobster tail with scallops. Many have done this and say it is just as good. However, you probably won't feel like you're getting $58 worth if you do. We have ADRs at Narcoossee's but I think I'll walk up to Citricos right before and see if they have availability. If so, we'll dine there. Citricos is such an underrated gem -- it puts Narcoossee's to shame.

We ate at Narcoossees on October 29th and I ordered the surf n turf. It was perfect, the filet was so tender that I could cut it with my fork (something not easily done when ordered welldone), and the lobster tail was large and had great taste.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. After the first bite you should have sent it back and had it substituted with shrimp or scallops.

I also had the buttermilk shrimp appetizer and it was lovely.

Our dinners were so good that we had no room for dessert and turned it down, this was our 5th day on the deluixe dining plan and we learned fast to only order what we could / would actually eat.

I totally agree with you, Remark44! I ate there in May and was so disappointed. Not only with the completely bland, tasteless lobster tail but also with the level of service. I know many, many people rave about Narcoosseee's but for me it wasn't worth it. Citrico's, on the other hand, was absolutely wonderful!

We were there in August and the surf and turf lobster is not from Maine (but we are and we know our lobster). In August you were able to get the Maine lobster on the dining plan.

We loved our meal and the view. And the man who seated us was from Maine. We were able to have a good lobster discussion.

Narcoosee's is my favorite restaurant and I've alwasy ordered the Surf & Turf. The Filet is IMHO absolutly amazing. I always thought the lobster tail was good not great.

This past october my DF and I got engaged and took the entire family out to Narcoosee's to celebrate about half the people got the surf & turf and the other half got the whole lobster.

Unfortunately, I tried the whole lobster before starting in on my lobster tail and I couldn't even eat my tail. The whole lobster was great. They said the difference was that the whole Lobster was a Maine lobster while the tail was carribean (i believe). Could absolutely tell the difference.

Now next year when I go I'll have to decide Filet or Whole Lobster.

I got the Calamari for appitizer and it was fantastic. The cheesecake for desert along with the French Pressed Coffee is one of the best desserts I've had in Disney.

We dined at Narcoosee's on Oct 26th. We all ordered an appetizer each & shared entrees. Appetizers that were excellent were the calamari & the stuffed shrimp. The crab cakes were somewhat disappointing, could have been fresher. We thought the seafood bisque was pretty bland.

Thank goodness we shared entrees because they were huge. BIL & SIL ordered the Surf & Turf they were both so full, that I was able to get a taste of their filet & lobster! I thought both the filet & the lobster were good. Agreed the lobster may not have been the freshest lobster available but it was pretty darn good! Overall we (7 of us) were very pleased with the whole meal. I ordered the swordfish and it was delicious. Service was excellent. All of the desserts were yummy, as was the french press coffee.

I agree with the PP's regarding the lobster tail vs the whole Maine lobster. When we went for my birthday trip I opted for the whole Lobster on the dining plan and the other four adults in our party had the surf and turf.

I was raving about my meal and the rest of my party was very ho-hum on the lobster from their surf and turf.

I had a bite of their lobster - not nearly as good as mine.

I was nice and shared a bite with each of them from my lobster. They all agreed that if their lobster was like mine - they'd have been much happier.

thanks for the lobster reviews. We will be dining there in December for my dad's 60th birthday and I know he and dh will order the lobster. Now. I can tell them to just order the Maine lobster istead of the surf and turf or they can substitute. Valuable info! We heard so many great things about this restaurant I have to say that I was surprised to hear about this.

I've lived in New England for 25 years and I TOTALLY agree with you! We ate at Narcoossee's a few years ago during Free Dining. The lobster tail was disappointing - tough and flavorless - but the filet mignon was outstanding. Even the server said "not a bad steak for a seafood place?"

I had the lobster at Fulton's Crab House in DTD and it was also terrible. Just tastless! The irony was that it was served with steamed red potatoes that were fabulous. When was the last time you were eating lobster and raving about the spuds?????

I just got back and ate at Narcoossee's, too. I had the surf and turf and enjoyed it immensely. The lobster melted in my mouth, as did the steak. I thought I was in heaven. Now, I also had some of the whole lobster (mom couldn't finish hers). Yes, it did have a little more taste and I enjoyed it, too. I'd have no problem returning and ordering the surf and turf again. In fact, I may have to go twice so I can get the whole lobster and the s&t ;)

Debbi - we ate the same meal. I had the shrimp as the appetizer, too. Of course I also had room for the almond crusted cheesecake, too. YUM!

I ate at Citrico's this trip, also. It was very good. But if I had my choice, I'd go back to Narcoossee's.

Terri

To be fair, I'll agree that the lobster tail with the surf and turf isn't the best lobster tail I've ever eaten. That said, as lobster tails (the non-Maine variety) go it is pretty good. While the flavor is not exceptional, I've never had a tough lobster tail there. All in all the surf and turf is an excellent meal and if someone walks out of Narcoossee's disappointed in their surf and turf meal I'd have to say they are one EXTREMELY tough customer.

Having grown up in Cape Cod, I too know what 'real lobster' should taste like...

Sadly, that's a rare thing down here in Florida. Unless it's advertised as 'Maine Lobster', it's usually a frozen, taste-free mass from off the coast of 'WhoKnowsWhere'...

One gets kind of used to it, but when paying the price that Narcoossee's charges for 'Surf and Turf', it's more than a little 'hard to swallow'.

Still, it's easily our favorite restaurant on the property.

We just stick with the fillet, or something else.
