Just saw this in the the Globe and Mail.
We have been okay. I still get a few calls but just hang up when I get them. How about you.? Has it worked for you?

OTTAWA — Listing your name on Canada's new do-not-call registry could actually increase the likelihood that you will be targeted by unscrupulous telemarketers.

The Consumers' Association of Canada says it has been inundated with complaints from people who have been called by scam artists after placing their telephone numbers on the registry, which went into effect last September.

The do-not-call list was created to prevent telemarketers from contacting people who do not want to be pestered with uninvited sales pitches. For companies to find out who they are not permitted to call, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission sells the list online for a fee.

"You can buy any list you want of people who subscribe to the do-not-call registry online. The whole of Toronto costs you 50 bucks for 600,000 names," Bruce Cran, president of the CAC, said in a telephone interview yesterday.

"That's just perfect for any telemarketer, because these are good names which they would otherwise have to pay money for to verify. In addition to that, there's no index list of cell phone numbers that you can get. However, people were encouraged to put their cell phone numbers on there as well."

Penalties for misuse of the registry run as high as $15,000 for a corporation, or $1,500 for an individual. But it's difficult to fine fraudsters who are based overseas - or those in Canada running a fly-by-night business.

Glenn Thibault, the NDP critic for consumer affairs, wrote federal Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart this week to ask if making the phone numbers on the registry available online is a violation of privacy laws.

Ms. Stoddart was already on the case.

"We have received a copy of [Mr. Thibault's] letter and we are just gathering information at this stage," said her spokeswoman, Valerie Lawton. "But we were aware of this issue before and we have discussed it with the CRTC. We have been in contact with them and understand that they are looking at it. They are taking it seriously."

Denis Carmel, a spokesman for the CRTC, said the commission is investigating the issue. "I cannot give you time lines. I cannot give you any other assurance. But we are aware of the situation and we are trying to assess how to respond," Mr. Carmel said.

He pointed out that if a foreign telemarketer abuses the registry to sell a product in Canada, the Canadian distributor of that product would be held accountable.

But if you are a Caribbean telemarketer selling fake Caribbean cruises, "that's another story," conceded Mr. Carmel.

"In that case we would issue a fine and we'll see how that goes."

Mr. Thibault said he has received numerous calls from people who believe they have been called by telemarketers who obtained their phone numbers from the do-not-call registry.

"We've all heard these stories where someone gets taken advantage of," said Mr. Thibault. "And if this does happen because we've forgotten to cross an 'i' or dot a 't,' then, shame on us. We're putting this in place to help, not to make it worse."

Mr. Cran said his organization has opposed the registry from the outset. But even the CAC did not contemplate the possibility that telemarketing hucksters would buy and use registry data.

"We're getting complaints because people didn't understand what they were getting into and gave out their phone numbers," he said. "They are now in the hands of all sorts of pirates that they never knew existed."

Yes and No. We registered for this months ago when it came out and it really didn't seem to be working. I went back to the website and it indicated I had never registered even though we had. We re-registered and within 48 hours the calls started to go down!:thumbsup2

NO..it's 10x worse at my house!!
In fact-there was a special on Global I think it was a few weeks back about how many folks names have been sold to other Telemarketers mostly out of Country and my name MUST have been on all lists! I have even filed a complaint with the CRTC about one company calling me non stop about my Vehicle warranty expiring (NEW car-Leased-LOTS of warranty left) and they replied that it didn't 'meet their criteria of harrassment"?!?!?!?! :scared:

Another Government mess up as per usual!

I registered on the first day, the website opened. My telemarketing calls have dropped to near zero over the past few months.

The only notable exception is the vehicle warranty scam calls that seem to be going on across North America.

I have also registered my phone number with http://ioptout.ca/ as this registry ensures most organizations that are exempt from the CRTC registry, must exclude me as well. More info here http://www.thestar.com/sciencetech/article/471991

I have found for the most part our calls have been cut down but they are def not at zero.

I did too..I was in Italy and logged on and registered all my numbers. After about 2 months..I re-checked and they showed NOT registered. SO did them again! I will look at the other site as well...:confused3

I've been getting calls from the US...the warranty thing, talking about my credit card, and aparently Macy's has been having one heck of a sale. It's really annoying. I had more results with call reveal than I did with the do not call list; but seeing as they sold my number that makes sense lol. I hate the CRTC so much.

My calls have gone WAY down, but I too still get the vehicle warranty and the fake "we're calling you about your credit card" calls.

The warranty ones seems to be dwindling..I am still getting "This is your Captain calling'--think that's a 'free' trip--numerous 'free' trips in fact, Credit Card protection--debt consolidation--duct cleaning--new windows--new doors--Investment brokers--and I really love the ones that put ME on hold until their agent can help me!!!! I am thinking of getting call privacy with Bell. Most of them have a number (800) but say unknown caller. Is that enough to have them blocked?

Then there are those people at my front door too! UGH...

Calls at our house are way up, Between 4 - 6Pm it can get crazy.

I seem to be very very lucky ... I win a free cruise every week or so .... I am on the no call list .... but the free cruises keep callin. :confused3

our calls seems to have dwindled away as well.

And I have to admit, i'm a more educated target, so now if I do get any type of call that I think is bothersome, I don't just hang up anymore, rather I interrupt the caller and say (very firmly and very loudly) "I want to be placed on your do not call list immediately. I do not want to be called by your company ever again." this seems to get the other party to immediately stop their spiel and they usually just say "ok miss, thank you". Honestly, I never knew to do that before.

whew!

I haven't got a call from the Captain yet. But "Boris" from Best Price Movers and "Anna" from The Moving Company used to call ALL the time.

OH YES! Annnaaa! I forgot her! If I ever moved they'd be the LAST company I would call just because they have driven me nuts for years!:crazy2:

I think ours have finally gone down.

What I really don't like though is that newspapers are exempt from the Do Not Call list. They are the worst for telemarketing. They phone ALL the time to try to sell subscriptions. I think it is stupid to let them be exempt. :crazy2:

Yes, I think I have been getting less call since registering.

I do keep getting the nice cruise ship horn - I just hang up.

Well...that explains everything. No wonder I'm getting scam calls on my cell phone and my (previously unlisted) home phone number! :crazy2:

I registered on the first day as well and I get maybe 1/wk? It reduced it right away!

Well-they say it takes 30 days at least to see the difference? Either way--I must be getting yours then!

I sent a complaint to the CRTC (again) last nite...telling them if it appears I must now get Call Privacy and how about THEY pay for it?!?!
