Do most DVC members know their exact dates or go based on availability?

I teach so I go on breaks throughout the year (I do not go during summer too hot!). So we can choose to go on Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, or Spring break.

Was just wondering if most DVC members know the exact dates they will be going each year in order to book at the 11 month window, or do you go based on what is available?

We knew we wanted to stay at the GCV this December. We had a 2 1/2 week range of dates and are going based on availability. We knew we wanted 6 nights. We don't own there and had to wait until the 7 month mark. We scored a 2 bedroom villa within our optional dates range. Because we are driving from Utah we were able to be flexible with dates. When we go to WDW, we have firm dates in place.
