Why are peple so disgusting?

Let me explain. I'm a cashier at a grocery store, and have seen everything from half-eaten chicken wings left on my belt, to candy smooshed on the floor, to vomit in grocery carts, etc... (I could write a book... :sad2:)

Anyway, I'm checking out a lady with her two children, and her oldest (he looked about 7) spits on my belt!! :scared1: Now, she did fuss him for it, (if you can even call it fussing...) and then leaves it for me to clean up.

I was rather aggravated about this. If it had been my child, 1) He wouldn't have done it in the first place and 2) I would have apologised and asked for a paper towel to clean MY child's mess.

I hate my job already. Stuff like this doesn't help me like it any more... What's happened to people nowdays?

Ok, I'm done. Ahhh, I feel better. :goodvibes

Yuck! I think the mom should've cleaned it up too, but then again, I'm known for being on TEAM CODGER!

I'm sure TEAM SPITTER will show up, though. lol

Isn't it the greatest when you're at work and you just have to bite your tongue when customers can do basically whatever rude, ignorant thing they want? That's my favorite. Especially when it's dear little angel child that is causing the issue and mom and dad of the year aren't doing a thing about it.

Yes you had a right to get upset. I have asked clerks for the cleaner and towels to clean the belt before just to help (and because I wouldn't put down my food until it was cleaned). Some people just don't care and the cashiers don't always have tons of time to clean up.

Hope your next day at work is better!

Wow! I really feel for you, especially having witnessed plenty of disgusting behavior in grocery stores myself.

So, here's something about grocery stores that has been bothering me. Are dogs allowed in a grocery store? You see people carrying their small dogs around while they do their shopping in all kinds of stores, including grocery stores. I would think the stores would frown on this. What really bugs me is a lady I've seen a few times who puts her bassett hound right in the cart. She spreads out a blanket on the bottom of the cart and he lies there while she shops. My son said it was cute but I told him I like dogs but I sure don't want to put my groceries in a cart where a dog's behind has been!!!!! So, people who work at grocery stores, does your store have a policy on animals (besides service animals) in the store?

I am not sure if it is state specific or not but in NC, it is a health code violation to have an animal in the grocery store. Lots of reasons for it. While I agree its really cute there are many reasons why I don't like it.

OT Post:
Yeah what is it with the dog thing? Or bringing any pet into the grocery store? Except service pets.:)
Last week when I was shopping for thanksgiving this guy had a snake wrapped around his arm! Yikes.
I don't think people would like it if I rode my horse in the store.
And now back to OP.;)

It's disquisting what some people will do, and it really makes you wonder.

that sort of thing drives me NUTS!! you have every right to be upset.

with all the stuff going on lately with the flu and colds in general i would have expected her to clean it up, too!! some people just don't know how to function in the real world. it amazes me how dumb people are.

Umm..that's just gross. I'm speechless.
The only thing I can think of is that she was just so mortified by what her child had done that she froze and couldn't think what to do?
I had this happen once, we were sitting in an extremely nice restaurant where the tables were very, very close to one another and our youngest daughter (who was 2 1/2 at the time) asked us in a VERY loud voice why the lady at the table next to us "was SO SO old, she looks really, really, really, really old. Is she going to die soon?". Part of it was the tone DD said it in as well - she was very serious and very sincere - which made it worse. Also, the woman really wasn't that old (probably late 50's -mid 60's) and definitely looked as if she worked hard to stay as young looking as possible. So it was truly as a bad as it could be - The woman literally froze with her hand in the air, my husband and I and our other children were simply speechless and horrified. There was total silence at our table because we froze in the moment and had no idea what to say or how to make it better (and DD is the youngest of our four children so you would think my ability to be struck speechless by a child's actions would have been long past!). I apologized to the woman and I picked up our daughter and left the restaurant without eating because it was just so shocking. Our daughter had never said anything like that before and hasn't since but we simply didn't know how to deal with it because we were simply speechless. Maybe something like that happened to the woman too - she was just too astounded by what her child had done to think of what the appropriate response should have been to the situation.

Next time I suggest this scenario

Child spits on belt
Mom is ready to haul tail
You announce that you have paper towels and cleaner for that and push the products her way. State very firmly, "Not a problem. Here are some cleaning supplies that will help you clean that right up."
OR, you could speak to the child and say "Germs are yucky. Let mom help you clean that up so other people don't get sick"

Sorry, I don't bite my tongue. People act a certain way because they know they can get away with it.
All that child learned was that he can spit anywhere he wants and all mom is going to do is "fuss" for a few seconds. Meanwhile, the spit is still there and both mom and child pretend it has magically disappeared. Often, these days parental "discipline" is simply a few words to make it look like they have made an effort, when really, they could care less. I am sure this was not the first time the kid spit and I am sure it won't be the last.

I can not stand people bringing dogs into the supermarket- its always those little dogsthat people think they should be able to bring everywhere and then they put them in the childs seat in the wagon!! I ended up complaining to the corporate office and they must have come down on the store because I have not seen dogs in there lately!
I don't even put my groceries up on the belts- we have self scanners that you scan the food as you take it off the shelf and put it right into the bags- on the way out you scan a bar code at the register and pay- it keeps a running tally on your hand scanner so you know exactly how much you have spent prior to even going to the register. You can go to the self service register- swipe your credit/debit card and be on your way! No taking the groceries out of the cart and then putting them back into that cart- bag as you go which is great because I bag things that go in each place in the house seperatly- frozen together, bathroom supplies together, downstairs pantry together etc...nice and easy to unpack!

Aren't the self scanners greeat?! I love them! I too cannot stand people and their pets in every shopping arena on earth. I think it is ridiculous and gross.

I work at a college library and just last week a man asked if we had a trash can. I reached under the desk and held it up for him and in the meantime he threw a ball of dirty tissues down on my desk and started to walk away like I was going to pick up his nasty tissues for him. :sad2:

I gave him a pointed look and held up the trash can further and he did pick up his tissies and throw them away but they were still on my desk momentarily. Yuck!

And this guy is in one of the medical programs here too so I know he knows better.

What is wrong with people? :sad2:

I can't believe the Mom didn't offer to clean it up. Maybe the kid had issues, but she should have cleaned it up.

As far as animals (mostly dogs) in grocery stores goes- here in Maine all a person has to say is the dog is a service animal and the store CAN'T do anything about it. AND it is ILLEGAL to ask what the animal is "servicing for" in other words, I could take my 80 pound weimaraner in there and say she was a service dog and there is NOTHING the grocery store can do- otherwise they are violating the ADA.

Wow! I never had that happen to me while cashiering. Yuck!

I worked for Winn Dixie and I will never shop there as I always found it unpleasant from my experiences.

However, I never found the customers to be icky. But then again, I never had to clean the bathroom.

Mermaid02: I thought service dogs had to be properly "labeled" with their service jacket? I could be mistaken, but I do recall seeing pets that have these and some even have some kind of id card or something attached. I guess I'm shocked at how a person can just declare the animal a service dog.

Even for handicap parking, you have to have the placard or tag that says you are permitted to park there. I don't see how a service animal would be any different.

I do apologize if that sounds ignorant and I dont' mean anything judgemental--but most animals I see have the jackets on to indicate they are a working animal. I agree that we aren't entitled to know what the dog is servicing, but we don't know the disabilities of people with the placards/tags for disabled parking either. Yet they still have to have that to park legitimately in those spaces.

Yuck gross. One of the wrose things I have seen was someone left a used tampon in the changing rooms when I worked at old navy...bathroom 3 feet away:sad2:

That's where I work too! And don't worry, I don't shop there either... :thumbsup2

Now the bathrooms are a ENTIRELY different story... Just wait until you hear about the "Diarreah Commentary" and "The lady who used the bathroom with the stall door WIDE OPEN!!" :lmao: I'm telling you, I could write a book... :sad2:
