Do girls still wear a garter to Prom?

It's been 4 years since my DD went tp her Senior Prom and all the girls wore them, but I havn't heard much about them lately. I was mentioning to DS about them and he looked at me like I was nuts...so I am assuming his date isn't wearing one. It made me wonder tho? I think maybe short dresses have become more popular that maybe the garter tradition disappeared with the hemlines?

Was there a point to the garter? (Just curious)

That's news to me. I went to the prom in 1990 and 1991 and as far as I know, no one wore garters. My nieces have been going to the prom over the last ten years and I haven't heard any mention of garters.

I thought that was just a wedding tradition. :confused3

Between family and friends, I have known 3 or 4 girls going to prom just about every year since the late 80's and no one has ever worn a garter. And this is for kids across the country. Lots of friends from our military days.

egads! a garter? under a prom dress? When I think of what a garter under a wedding dress signifies, I'm rather appalled that girls ever wore them under a prom dress.

here in IL it has been tradition...the girls usually match the color to their dress, and then add a charm that has personal meaning. Like, my DD's BF plays guitar so she sewed a guitar charm from Hobby Lobby on hers. The girls give the garter to the guys as a keepsake, and many a girl goes home with the guys tie. Now, if the garter was hanging on the guys rearview mirror, that meant another thing entirely :rolleyes1 which my DS was like, WHAT!:scared1:, LOL....but just sayin' how it was. Now that kids go in groups w/out dates (which I like) I can see how the tradition has maybe been dropped.

DS just had his prom this past Saturday and, judging by the Facebook pix, yes, the girls still wear garters ;), at least up here in the "wilderness".

Here's our little prom chuckle:most everyone else went to someplace fancy and nice for dinner beforehand. DS, his five best friends and their dates went to....Buffalo Wild Wings.....and ate....150 wings:scared1:. He said to me, "Mom, those girls are pretty wimpy, they only had four or five each, so we guys had to do the rest...." Then they went and had their pictures taken in front of Lambeau Stadium!

Ah, kids....

Yes, DD went to her Jr Prom last year and she said the girls had garters. She was unaware that it was a tradition here. She isn't going to her Sr prom this year. As a matter of fact prom is this Friday.

She said they had a contest to see who's date would go up the farthest up the girl's leg. From what she tells me there was no contest since majority of them have gone even farther.

Neither my DD nor any of her friends (to my knowledge) wore a garter. :confused3 Like someone else said ... thot that was just a wedding tradition.

.

i haven't heard of prom garters in 20 years! At my senior prom (late 80's) there were a few girls with them- but they were the "loose" ones. I have a few pictures with the girls and their dates. The dates are wearing the garter on their sleeve!

I've seen it as a wedding tradition and even that is waning in popularity.

That's awesome! DS group is going to a Military museum/gardens for theirs...the main draw of course being the dozen or so Tanks on the grounds that you can climb on etc. I think their pics are going to be so cool...very different. It is a little further of a drive and their Prom is this Friday so I am hoping traffic is not too bad. It stinks when Prom is on a school day.

Wow.

alrighty then.....I think DS would pass out. Looking at locations you guys are posting from, maybe this is a midwest thing? :confused3

Not all the midwest. I grew up on the edge of the midwest and we didn't do the garter thing and we now live in the midwest and my DD who graduated 2 years ago didn't do the garter thing. And I have not heard of it with any of my friends kids, which span several decades.

I have only heard of it for weddings.

:laughing:Live in southern IL an hour from the border of Kentucky. Ity bity town which should be referred to as a village called Carrier Mills. Just tipped 2000 people. Around here from what I hear (will be here 2 years this Aug) all there is to do is drink, have sex and take drugs. Wish I knew about that before I moved.

The joke around here is that the average 16 year old girl's main goal is to be pregnant and married at 16. Things sure are different from up north in Downers Grove. Real culture shock. Fishing, hunting, working on the farms and mining. That's what they have to offer here.

I at my age like it, don't mind it but my much young DD's aren't real crazy about it. Youngest DD17 gets teased because she won't do as the others do. She is a "good girl", "over achiever" as they call her. Oh, another big thing around here, the girls have to have a golden brown tan. They lay out in the sun constantly. DD17 does not tan, neither does DD31. They take after me, burn, peel, back to lily white.

OP I've only seen garters worn at weddings NEVER a prom. I think maybe in the 80's because of Madonna.

Never heard of garters for proms. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to be a thing around here. Just seems kind of inappropriate.

I wore a garter on my wedding day, mostly for the "something blue", but didn't throw it, and no one but DH saw it. That whole little scene that can happen after throwing the bouquet and the garter, with some random guy crawling his fingers up some random girl's leg...ew. Actually, ditto for the bride and groom when taking it off at the reception.

As far as going out to dinner beforehand...what happens at the prom? Mine, 35 years ago, and my kids', were all at restaurants where dinner was served.

Still??? Girls NEVER wore garters to prom. How gross...and I am not a prude. Especially if this is something parents know about and encourage.

We had a small table with finger foods and some chocolate dipped fruit at my prom in 2004. It was at a reception hall.

Most of the proms in the area I grew up in were at reception halls or hotels on the beach.

As for the garter thing...We didn't wear them and I had never heard of them being worn for prom. You learn something new everyday!

I agree with the bolded. Never heard of that and I think the idea is terrible. If my DD suggested that to me, I'd have to smack some sense into her.
