Do characters know their books or just movies?

I just finished reading the kids both of the Alice books. This got me wondering about the charcters, do they know the books they are from or just the Disney movies? I’m sure they can fake an answer in character but do they really know their books?

I've never thought to ask the characters that type of question, but my guess is that they're mostly familiar with the Disney version of their character. After all, some of the Disney versions only have a passing resemblance with the source material (can you imagine what it would be like if Disney had been true to the fairly tale version of many of their characters?).

They are supposed to know whatever has been produced by Disney (gets tricky for some of the princesses with all of the Palace Pets, 5-Minute-Princess-Bedtime-Story type of content these days, so even that’s not a certainty).

Outside of that, I wouldn’t think they would. That would get tricky for them. Is Ariel supposed to acknowledge that she’s really sea foam at the end of her fairy tale?

How funny, I wasn’t thinking of some of the darker origin stories! I named my daughter after Ariel so you’d think I’d have considered about the sea foam! I was thinking more like the characters with fairly modern books like Alice and Mary Poppins that had not been as drastically changed as the princesses were. I’m a bookworm so it just occurred to me when we finished with Through the Looking Glass. I think I’ve now read all the books that have a ride or characters at the park to DS so we were talking about questions for the characters. One of my favorite experiences was getting a scolding by Mary Poppins on our trip right after I’d read the book to DS. I love the characters from books being brought to life.

Some Characters yes some no.

Alice and the Mad Hatter are very familiar with the books. Alice calls herself "Alice Plesence Liddell" or Alice Liddell. And, they know characters that are not in the Movie but in the books.

They also know the back stories not told in the Disney Movie. Who is the "MaryAnn" the White Rabbit thinks Alice is, etc.

Ariel will talk about her daughter "Melody" when asked. Mary Poppins will only know what is in the Disney Movie, not the book(s).

The character performers most likly know that the books exist so in a way the character know
