do certain smells ever bring back memories for you?

Yesterday I was getting my dd a clean wipe from a package and as soon as I opened it I got this vision of watching my dad eat BBQ chicken at a picnic. We always had those wipes in the car so I guess thats where it came from. It was a nice memory anyway


What smells bring back pleasant memories for you?

There are a few but the first one that came to mind is the perfume "Longing". I wore it on my first vacation at WDW and everytime I smell it I am just transported back.

Now another one is the cologne "Preferred Stock". A guy I used to date wore it, I hate the way that cologne smells now. It literally makes me feel sick when I smell it.

I took the "Flying Scotsman" from London, England to Aberdeen, Scotland with my Mom when I was 4 years old. Everytime I smell diesel fuel I am transported back to that London train station!!!

the cologne Polo...DH wore that in high school...i remember "borrowing" his letter jacket and it was just bathed in Polo...he still wears that cologne for me today...

A couple weeks ago, I bought a Glade candle...it had a lilac scent to it. I had it in the bedroom and the smell was about driving me nuts!! I knew I recognized it, but to save my soul, I couldn't place it!! That night, as I was just about to sleep, it came to be! I had a Barbie decades ago that came with small, oval light purple stickers with lilacs on them. The stickers were the scratch and sniff type and smelled exactly like that candle!! I hadn't thought about those things in years and years, but smelling that candle brought it all right back to me!

Diesel fuel reminds me of riding the bus with my grandmother as a little kid. It also reminds me of the airport, which in turn reminds me of WDW. Always a good memory.

Life saver mints remind me of my Nana's handbag. She always had them in there. When I smell life saver mints, it makes me feel like a five year old living one of the best times of my life. My Nana is the BEST!

Clinique perfume. I'm not sure what the name of it is, but one of my first supervisors back at Census wore it all the time. I haven't seen her in years, but when I smell that perfume, I think of her and the first office I worked in back in 1987.

One of my Dad's sisters wears the same perfume she did when we were little kids. We saw her in 2000 after 18 years and when I walked into her house in Florida it smelled just like her house in Massachusetts. We used to go to her house every Sunday for a big dinner that my Nana would cook. We had the best time playing with all my cousins in the woods. So when I visit her house and smell that perfume, I am transported back to some very happy memories.

Sometimes I'd love to visit my childhood again. There were some great times!

Diesel fuel and brake pads make me think I'm in London.
Roots perfume makes me think of the Canadien pavillion in Epcot and the Wilderness Lodge.
My mom's perfume, I don't know what it is, but one whif and I'm a little kid again.
Pine needles make me think of hiking in the mountains.
There are many, many smells that make me happy. I wish we could take smell imprints like we take photographs so we could instantly be transported to wherever we wanted to go with just one sniff.

Mothballs remind me of my grandmother's apartment. One whiff sends me back to Brooklyn, 1970.

New crayons remind of school (what a stretch!) Also, things that smell like those blue mimeographed handouts. I remember my mother working on those things, with the blue paper in the middle. I guess Xerox machines have replaced those?

oh Deisel always takes me back to the Yukon because of the busses we used for our tours! Thats a pleasant memory! (stale coffee takes me there too lol)

Avon's Sweet Honesty perfume transports me back to the summer of 1975 when I spent two weeks in Wildwood, NJ with my girlfriend and her family and I wore it every day! When I smell it now I am walking down the boardwalk!

<font color=navy>Funny how so many of us are tied to the smell of diesel fuel. Whenever I smell diesel fuel, I'm transported back to Madrid, where I did a LOT of walking.

Rainy day smells remind me of Porrua, where my cousins live in Spain - I close my eyes .... um, so does the smell of cows

Whenever I get a whiff of Chanel #5, I immediately think of my mom. I have a small vial at work, and every once in awhile, I open it. Whenever my dd smells it, she exclaims, 'Nana'

My Dad always had a Sunoco gas station and the smell of gasoline reminds me of him and the good old days hanging around the station.

Every now and then I smell snuff. My great-grandma dipped snuff. She kept the can in a pocket on her dress. I'm not sure what triggers the smell, but it takes me back to spending time with her.

Aramis aftershave reminds me of Grandaddy.

The smell of watermelon puts me back on my grandparents carport and all the kids having a seed spitting contest.

There is a girl in my office who just started wearing perfume that smells like something my Grandmother wore. She has been gone 20 years so when I suddenly smelled it at my desk I had to walk around and see who it was! I thought my Grandmother was right there in my cube!
