We are traveling with family that will be occupying 3 adjacent rooms. We have an infant who will be going to sleep by 7:30 or so. I'd love to be able to talk and watch TV in one of the adjacent rooms to ours so we don't wake our DD up.

Has anyone brought a baby monitor onboard, and does it work between rooms? We wouldn't go more than one room away, but if it's not going to work, I'd rather just leave it at home and save the space in my suitcase!

Great question! I don't know why they wouldn't, but I am curious as well now :confused3

If the walkie-talkies will work. It makes sense for a baby monitor to work. They both work on or near the same frequency.

If you are in the room next door you probably could hear the baby crying without the monitor! We heard the baby next to us the whole cruise just through the walls LOL! I was shocked that the husbands snoring over there didn't wake that baby up all night long to be honest because it was like a buzzsaw in our room LOL!!

We've taken a typical Fisher-Price baby monitor on board. While staying in cabin 5630 (1st one in forward of the cat 7 cabins). The range would have ALMOST allowed us to go to the Buena Vista Theatre with the monitor in the cabin.

So based on my real-life experience, I would expect a baby monitor to realisticly be usable up-to 5-6 cabins away.

BTW, walkie-talkies and baby monitors ARE different. The typical monitor uses a 900Mhz frequency like previous generations of cordless phones. Walkie-talkies use special FRS or GMRS radio frequency bands, and their use is VERY spotty and not reliable on board.

On that same trip I had a pair of GMRS 1 watt radios. DW could be in our cabin and I could not walk the hall to the atrium before losing her signal. Yet we had no difficulties communicating bewteen the cabin and Diversions. So in one case a signal couldn't go more than 1/4 the length of the ship on the same deck, but worked great 3/4 the length of the ship two decks down.

We had 2 cabins across the hall from each other. Our baby monitor worked, but we had to find a good spot to stay in range. For us, the receiver worked best in the closet! :rotfl2:

We were side by side and it worked great. It was a Safety 1st Crystal Clear monitor. $16 at Target...!
