APs expire one year from the date you first use them--i.e., you can buy years in advance but the year doesn't start til your first use...then, you have 13 months to get the renewal rate...
AP vouchers (which is what you would be purchasing) do not expire. However, AP vouchers purchased through DVC do have some strings attached (valid DVC membership, residency requirements, etc.) I will leave it to the DVC AP experts to point out any potential problems with your plan.
Good thinking.
We always purchase our AP vouchers prior to the price increases. We just did again about a month ago. Your advance purchase idea is only good for new passes, not renewals. I currently have a valid AP that doesn't expire until next May, and a voucher for a new AP.
I purchased 2 AP vouchers August 2005 and I just used one this summer for my grandson. I still have the other one tucked away. I only paid $299 for each of them. Boy how the price went up in only 2 years (now $348) -- these are before taxes. So yes you can purchase your AP vouchers now for activation later. The day you turn them in for your actual ticket is the start day of the clock ticking for the one year usage.

Advance purchase to beat price increases works for renewals, too. Despite the "rule" that you can only buy right before your expiration, I buy right before the price increases and have no problem renewing months later. I bought in August 2006 the weekend before the price increase and didn't use the card to renew my AP until the end of April, 2007. I also have my renewal purchased this summer right before the price increase which I will use at the end of April, 2008 to renew my AP.
