On two occasions, in two separate Radio Shacks, when making a purchase, the salesperson tried to add an accessory to my purchase without asking me. The first time, DH was purchasing a new phone, and the sales guy picked a random case, took it out of the package, and started putting it on the phone. I thought maybe it was a promo that we didn't know about, but no, they were going to charge full price for it. They didn't ask, just opened the pkg and started putting it on the phone. Today, I bought a DS on clearance (got a good deal!), and the guy took a case off a rack and started ringing it up with my purchase. Seemed put out when I asked him to remove it. Gave me a bit of 'tude when I turned down the insurance type add-on as well. Reminded me of a rental car rep who tries to sneak extra insurance on a person without their ok. Puts a bad taste in my mouth, and never happened at Best Buy or any other electronics type store. Is this Radio Shack policy?

That's just crazy.

Then again, I wouldn't say anything until it came time to pay. I'd ask why it was more than the item I'm buying and then pick a fight with them over the price. After all, I certainly didn't ask for the case, he gave it to me.

I've never heard of this, at Radio Shack or anywhere else for that matter. I would be very put out by it, and tell the clerk that if he wanted to put that item in my bag, it had better be free. :sad2:

They don't do that at our store. Since they did it twice now to you I would call their headquarters and discuss it! I would have also said thanks for the gift and paid the bill minus the case. Thats crazy!

Stuff like this makes me crazy. Who would actually go along with that? Does it ever work? I would certainly call the corporate folks and discuss it with them (and I'm not much of a complainer).

No it is not and never in my life have I had that happen. How strange.

not only would I not buy the item, I sure as heck would not buy whatever else I had intended to purchase.

I have confidence that I could find it elsewhere.

Radio Shack is in a pretty crappy business, overall, and in places where it costs big money to rent space and still costs big money to hire staff it drives some rather aggressive commercial approaches. We recently had another discussion here about how their staffing is kept low, to keep costs low, and that sometimes results in a customer who's purchase would take a very long time continually having to wait while the lone staff member helps a customer who just needs to quickly pay for something and leave.

All the big money to be made in electronics, these days, is to be made either online, in big box stores, or in high-end boutiques. How a place like that justifies its existence, I don't know, but I suppose it provides a valuable service to communities, giving folks who don't go online a reasonably decent place to get what they need, even though they need to try to operate the way they do to keep owners satisfied.

I only remember them trying to sell me batteries, don't shop at RS very often. They have a store in the mall & another one in the plaza next to the mall...

Got my son a new cell phone last week at Verizon and the same thing happened.

Salesguy got a leather case off the rack and just put it on the phone without asking. Then he's like, "this is a great cover".

"Great, but I don't want it."

A suitably snarkier reply would be, "Great! Thanks for including it for free!" :)
