DNA Testing for Genealogical Research

I am thinking of researching my ethnic ancestry through DNA testing. Has anyone else done this? If so, how detailed were the results and what vendor did you use? I am of European ancestry, so I am interested in finding out what European ethnic groups contribute to my DNA profile.

I don't know a lot about how it works and/or how detailed the results are but National Geographic has a program that I've considered. The only negative is that they track by gender- so I only receive info about my maternal ancestors. I would need my brother to track the paternal side.
I'm sure there are more detailed programs (and more expensive -NG is $100, I think) but I don't know how reliable the results are.
