DME Question

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but despite many trips to WDW, I've never used DME.

We are headed down to WDW the day after T-giving, for 9 nights at Ft. Wilderness Cabins. I usually rent a car, but am inclined not to this trip for a couple of reasons (1) we have 3 adults & 2 kids, so would need a larger vehicle, which is expensive given it's T-giving weekend, and (2) I want to use the $$$ we save on a car to rent a golf cart for our stay at the Fort.

BUT - I want to get groceries for the cabin. I considered a delivery service, but would rather just do the shopping myself (I know, I'm strange). So, I'm thinking of renting a car for just one day. Which leads me to my question...

Can I go pick up the rental car and drive that from MCO while the rest of my party heads to the resort on DME? That way I wouldn't have to worry about having a car big enough for all of us and our luggage - I could just get a compact for the day. I would then drive to the resort, check in (reservation is under my name), and tell them that the rest of my party would be arriving shortly on DME. I would then head off to the store to get our groceries. I would return the car at the car care center the next morning.

If I do this, will they hold the room keys for the rest of my party and give them to them when they arrive? The cabin may not be ready yet anyway, but if it is it'd be nice for them to be able to get in without waiting for me to return to the store.

Also, can my suitcase go on DME with the rest of my party even if I don't take DME to the resort? Does each person's tag have their name on it, or are they all in the name of the person who booked the reservation? I have read that they now only send 1 tag per person - should I request a second tag for another member of my party and put that tag on my suitcase so it can go on DME with them?

Not sure how they'll handle the keys for you, but everything else should work out just fine the way you have it mapped out.

You could... if you really think you'll get to the resort via car by way of a supermarket faster than they'll get there via DME ;)

Yep. That's very true. I guess it's theoretically possible if the DME trip is at the outer end of the range and the grocery stop is near record fast, but it is likely that the DME passengers will arrive before the OP.

Sorry - guess I didn't explain it well. I know grocery shopping will probably take a while, so I was going to go to the resort and check in (assuming that the rest of my party cannot check in without me, because the reservation is in my name) and then I would go to the grocery store. I'd still have them take DME so that I don't have to rent a big enough car for all of us & our luggage.

Yes, that should work. And yes, your bags can go with DME as well.

Your luggage can travel DME no problem! If you need additional DME tags you can request them.
