DME rules & FAQ state that DME is not a "luggage only" service. There is a risk to do what you have been doing.You don't have to ride DME to have them deal with your bags for you.
We use DME for our luggage, but we rent a car for our bodies. Best of both worlds. Off the plane, pick up car and go. Sometimes straight to a park or dinner. Bags are brought to our room whenever but we don't have to wait for them, or a bus.
If your luggage is misdirected (by either the airline or DME), DME will know you did not ride the bus. So they will not help you track down your missing luggage. By the time you discover something is wrong, it may be too late to file a claim with your airline.
Since most times, there is no problem with lost/misdirected luggage, this risk may be one you are willing to accept. If you've ever had a problem with misdirected luggage, you'd be more than willing to spend the few extra minutes on DME rather than deal with the hassle and much longer time resolving the issue. YMMV.
So, I just reserved a towncar.
