DME & international guests?

I was reading in the unofficial guide and it basically said they probably wont ship the luggage tags to international addresses.

And went on to explain that we must collect our luggage & do customs, and can then choose to drop off the luggage when we check in to DME, which I get the whole customs thing...

However, our flight actually stops in LAX first - we will be collecting luggage & doing customs in LA.

The LA to Orlando step is 100% domestic, and we were wanting our luggage to be handled at Orlando the same as the others (aka: leave the luggage with DME and just get on the bus without having to go through the waiting-at-baggage-claim process a second time the same day)

I'm assuming given we fly into Orlando domestically technically it should be handled the same as any other domestic luggage, however if they wont ship us the tags, are we totally out of luck?

Being Canadian, I suppose we're international guests. All I've ever done is tell DME which domestic flight we arrive on and which domestic flight we leave on (all our choices connect somewhere in the US). They've always mailed our luggage tags without any issues. This also avoids the 4 hour before flight time DME international guest pickup that we don't need. :)

Will you be getting custody of your bags and going through customs in LA? You're moving from the int'l terminal to a domestic terminal? You'll check in, with your bags, for the US flight?

If so, you could just check them at LAX and then when you get to MCO tell them at the DME area that you have bags without tags. I believe they take the tag receipts (OK that's not the right name but my mind isn't giving me the right word right now) and the description of the bags, and they end up getting the bags onto the DME bag truck.

This! :thumbsup2 You'll give (at least show) the folks at the DME counter (don't go directly to the bus line) your baggage claim stubs & bag description. They'll get your bags and deliver them to the hotel.

Could you collect you luggage, go through customs, then attach your yellow tags and recheck it? Then your luggage will be pulled aside when it reached mco

We're from Canada and ME does take our bags to the resort but... you have to claim your bags when you enter the US (or for us, when you do Immigration at your last Canadian stop since they have it set up in many Canadian airports).

However, regardless of where you're coming from you'll have to collect your bags at MCO if you're arriving after 10 pm since the service ends at that time.

I know this is a relatively old thread, but I am not sure if things have changed. My nieces are flying in from Montreal, and will meet us at the airport. They are under our reservations, so I know the tags wil come to us. Do you know if they need to go through customs, and if they can have DME collect their bags if we send them the tags?

I almost think it may be worth it to us to go grab their bags ahead of the flight and take them with us if they cannot have DME take the bags to our resort.

Under normal conditions:

If you have to clear or reclear customs in Orlando, Magical Express works the same way as clearing customs before entering the U.S. After clearing customs you put the yellow DME tags on your bags if not already and then put your bags on the other conveyor belt (or sometimes the counter agent will keep them) and you leave the customs station with just your carryons.

Orlando irregularities:

Sometimes the roving agent will require that you lug the bags out of the customs station with you. Sometimes the agent will require that you put the bags on the other conveyor belt.

I see. I would have loved for them to just travel with us, btu that would involve a four hour ride to us ratehr than the 2 hours or so they have.

If I'm not mistaken, they will clear US Customs in Montreal before leaving. If you mail them their tags ahead of time, they should have no issues with tagging their luggage and having it taken to your resort directly by DME. Have them double-check the airport that they're flying out of...can't remember if US pre-clearance is at both airports...someone else might know.

As FishyMom says, they will clear customs in Montreal (YUL) so they will land at MCO as a domestic flight and they can use the yellow tags to have DME collect their luggage.

That makes life so much easier. I can send them their tags and knwow we are all set. Thank you all for helping a nervous Auntie settle down.
