DME - international flight via Newark

I have a question re yellow luggage tags.

I'm flying from Glasgow, Scotland to Orlando but we have a flight change in Newark. However I'm not sure if we will see our luggage at Newark although I believe we have to clear customs & immigration at that point.

Do I put the tags on at Glasgow?

If you do a "pre-clear" or preliminary customs clearing in Glasgow (that is, before arriving in the U.S.) I would say go ahead and put the yellow tags on then. For some countries including Canada, the "pre-clear" is all the customs activity that you need to accompany the baggage to, except for occasional spot checks or audits, and Disney Magical Express baggage goes right to the resort after unloading in Orlando.

If you don't do any customs activity in Glasgow, you will definitely clear customs later someplace else and here it is better to not put the yellow tags on yet.

The main reason not to put yellow tags on prior to clearing customs is to reduce confusion and possible rip-off by baggage handlers.

I would bet that you would be going through US Customs at Newark. I doubt that any US airline would transport baggage that had not cleared customs yet (how would they segregate it from bags that get on in Newark, for example). But as soon as you claim your bags off the baggage carousel in Newark, you could attach the yellow tags to them in the line for Customs (or in line after Customs as you wait to check them on the flight on to Orlando).

I would recommend calling your airline to check on this, and if it's not too expensive, perhaps calling DME and checking what they suggest you do.
