We have reservations to stay on-site and then we are planning on staying at the new Lego Land hotel for a few nights.

The cost for taxi is about $100 from the Disney resort to Lego Land and then about $150 from Lego Land to MCO.

We've considered these options:
1) Take the DME to the airport and rent a car. The bad part about this is that we waste several hours.
2) Rent a car at a site in Disney. If we did this, could we get DME to MCO?

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Yes, you can book DME for just your arrival into MCO.
For $250, you can rent a car....easily, with money left over I would think. Alamo and National are located at both the Dolphin and the Car Care Center by the entrance to MK. The CCC will send a ride for you to bring you to their offices..but you have to call to set it up the day before. I like to rent my car on my day in Epcot...just walk out the International Gateway, over to the Dolphin and rent the car (they're open until just 4pm though). I do all the paperwork, and they give me the keys. Then I head back to Epcot. When I'm ready to leave and return to my resort, I go to the Dolphin, hand the keys to the valet people out front. They bring the car around and off I go.

There are also companies located in various resorts in the DTD area. For instance...Budget is at the Doubletree. Some will come get you, some don't.

For us to return the car at MCO is very expensive due to different pick up and drop off locations. Could I return the car back at Disney and grab a DME bus to MCO even if I checked out 3 days before?

No. You are entitled to one round trip on DME only while you are staying at the Disney resort. You cannot take DME even if you return the car at a DW location because you are no longer staying in DW.

Although it is convenient, you do not need to rent on site, almost all the rental companies around Disneyworld will pick you up and drop you off and are often significantly less than an airport rental or on the Disney property. If you are not returning to stay at a Disney resort after LEGOLAND you can always do an airport drop off. If it is just 2-3 days you need the car you should be able to get if for about $100

Are you sure those fares are accurate? I've never been to
LegoLand, so don't know how far from MCO it is. But......it costs less to hire a Towncar from MCO to a WDW resort, and back to MCO than that $150 cab fare from LegoLand to MCO! I would see what a towncar company might charge you.

You can only use DME when you have an existing resort reservation, so that's not going to be an option. Looks like returning the car to MCO, or hiring a car service.
