What happens if the airline loses some of your luggage when you are using DME? How will you know if it all arrives at MCO if you don't collect it from the luggage carrousel? Who tracks it down, the DME people or myself? Thanks in advance for your help.

Good questions and a reason I am leery of DME. I suppose I am hyper controlling but I like to lay hands on my bags before leaving the airport. The thought of our luggage riding 'round the baggage carousel as we head to our resort, hoping that the person who grabs them is in fact a disney employee...don't like it :scared1:

If your luggage is tagged it never hits the carousel. It is pulled by the handlers and loaded behind the scenes.

You can always not tag your luggage and just pick it up for the bus ride.

Rarely should the guest have to resolve baggage issues himself but if so, Magical Express transportation back to the airport and again back to the resort should be asked for and provided.

You can claim your baggage yourself at Orlando without using the yellow ME tags, but be prepared to re-check the baggage with ME (very rare) in case the space under the bus is taken by a few electric wheelchairs or something like that.

Claiming your baggage yourself is not foolproof as someone at an intermediate resort stop might grab it by mistake.

Thank you for your help, esp Seashore for that link. DM (75 yrs. old) is really worried about getting her luggage. We're flying Airtran for the first time and she is sure that we will not get our bags. I think we'll just not put the ME tags on them and collect them ourselves. Unless we arrive on the B side of the airport. ( I'll check that out on MCO's web site) That should make her feel better. Heaven forbid I make her tag her bags and she doesn't get them.

AirTran baggage claim is on the A side. Never had any problems getting my luggage with AirTran.

Just an FYI about how DME handles luggage behind the scenes. Notice the lil barcodeon the tag? That barcode gets scanned no less than 5 times between the airport and the resort. Add to the equation GPS tracking on the delivery trucks, DME always knows where each bag is. So if the airline loses a bag, it wouldn't be scanned by DME, and they'd know instantly that it's an airline issue which can happen regardless of DME or not.

The good thing is that with this tracking system, DME greatly reduces the liklihood of actually misplacing a bag. And if it does get misplaced, they know where it is, and can often solve the problem before anyone realizes it.
