DLR - Riding with a Port?

I'm planning a December trip to Disneyland. Yesterday I had a port put in my chest. I was wondering - which rides should I avoid with the port? I'm guessing anything with shoulder straps.

Any thoughts?

It really depends on where it is on your chest, as some placements are easier to use on rides than others. I would ask a CM politely what they think, but really the only upside down ride is California Screaming, so anything else should be OK....seriously I cannot think of anything else that would cause a problem. HAVE FUN!

Feel free to PM any questions as we are close to DLR and go frequently...and I am an RN with many friends who have a port.

I have had a port for a few years and comfort is the only reason I would not go on a ride. I can't speak for DL rides, we go to WDW. My rule of thumb is if a strap will cover/touch my port I don't go on it. If you are unsure, just ask a CM on a given ride where the straps are on the ride. Good luck!

Thanks to both of you - you put my mind at ease. I was worried I'd have to forgo all of the rides! LOL

I was trying to remember which rides had over-the-shoulder restraints, and for the life of me, I can't seem to remember. I can't ride any of the coasters anymore, so Screamin' is out anyway.

The only ride I can think of with shoulder straps is Screamin. None of the DL mountains have more than a lap bar.

Is jostling an issue? (I know very little about ports.) Both Indy and Star Tours are *bumpy* and Goofy's Sky School is jerky.

Jostling is an issue for an entirely different health reason. I can no longer ride any of the bumpy or jerky rides, and Screamin is out as well. After looking at the images Sherry posted, I think I should be okay on the rest with a port.

I've had a port for years and I know it wouldn't limit me at all. I can't ride on lots of attractions but if I could, I know I'd not even think about my port. If yours is new though and possibly still tender, or if it is being accessed, then that's a different story. :-)

It's only a few days old at this point, so still very tender. I've been told it'll be accessed at least 2-3 times a month, so I'm not sure how tender it'll be in December.

Right now, it's pretty hard to ignore.

If you have problems with jerky rides or coasters because of another health condition I would try and avoid the mountains (with the exception of splash possibly, if you can handle the drop) including space, matterhorn, and big thunder as they are all fast, jerky and have quick turns that could jerk/jostle you. I would visit youtube and look at videos of all the rides to see how they might affect your body if you ride them. For example, TSM starts/stops quickly and turns at a rapid rate making you jerk around. For some this is okay, but for others it would be too much (motion sickness, spine problems, etc). Remember that the boat rides (PoTC, IASW, etc) often get backed up and you can bump into other boats. Sometimes this happens during the ride itself, sometimes it only happens at the end of the ride...it really depends on how many boats they have running along with many other factors.

Once you get over the initial surgery/swelling/discomfort then it doesn't hurt to access a port- only if it's being accessed at the time you're at DL and as such has the needle in it, then you probably won't even notice that you have one other than seeing the little bulge. They have a cold spray to use to "desensitize" the skin over your port. I had it one time inadvertently because I couldn't say "no" fast enough. That stuff is painful, IMO! Remember that the needle is only going through a small layer of skin- not all the way into a vein. Hopefully you'll have relief and comfort with your port and will no longer have to worry about access.

Thank you so much for that info! It makes me feel much better about all of this. I know what you mean about the spray. They've used it for normal IV acess for me once - it's as bad as the lidocane shots! No thank you - I'd rather them just poke and get it over with!

I have another surgery in a few days. They said since the port is so new (only a week old at that time), it'll probably be more sore than it will in the future. Anything beats an IV in the foot like I've had in the past!

What she said! I cannot ride any of these anymore (which is very upsetting!). I would also add Indy to that list - rougher than most coasters!
