We are looking at going to DL the first week of January 2012. We've heard the crowds during the week right after New Years are very light and that the Christmas decorations are all still up. Has anyone gone to DL during the first week in January? Any downside to going during that week?

The official holiday season lasts till January 8 at the resort this year. I am also thinking about a visit during the first week of January and am wondering what the crowds will be like. It is different than previous years because Christmastime at the resorts usually ends Jan 2 or 3 but this year it is extended a little longer. I'm thinking it will be not quite as slow as previous years because some schools will still be out that week, but it shouldn't be as bad as the weeks of and before New Years.

Because of the shift in the holiday season that the PP noted, I'd guess it will be mildly busy.

Thanks Tiffani. Well we're booked for January. Good luck on your trip!

We went this year during the first week and it was way busier than we expected! Several school districts have that entire first week off, including ours, which is now why Disney (in my opinion) has pushed their Holiday time back. It's not 4th of July busy, but it was busy. We arrived on a Tuesday and the wait for Matterhorn was 45 minutes at around noon. The other issue was you could tell the resort had no idea about the impending crowds and they were grossly understaffed (one cashier working at the Mint Julep bar, 1 track open on BTMR even though the line was 30 minutes long, etc.) Frustrating. The fact that they have officially extended the holidaytime tells me they at least will have a better handle on staffing (hopefully).

We were there the first week of Jan 2010 and also noticed bigger than expected crowds, and being way understaffed. There were less people in the park, but wait times were the same or longer as we encountered on our previous summer trip. This Jan we are doing the second week, 10-14th, and I'm wondering if thats gonna be better or worse.
